Went to look at a GC today
« on: January 20, 2008, 19:56:29 »
As it says above I took a 97 p reg grand cherokee for a test drive today. Oh it was so nice to get back in motor that fits me properly.

Anyway they are asking £2499 for it, however it's not perfect. drivers mirror has gone funny and can't see anything in it, ABS light on. Poss warped discs and a slight pull to the left, and no towbar. On the plus side it's only got 61k on it,it's a 4 litre, the back axle has been done and it drives nice a quietly. Also has a good service history.

I struck a deal with the bloke but I think i'm getting ripped off and want to see what you guys think.

Basicly he's agreed to swap it for my 98 3.9 disco thats got 105k on it, however it's gas converted and the GC isn't,  also he wants me to put a new MOT on the disco. That said the GC will have a new mot but i'm going to have to put on a towbar and gas convert it.

I would have liked to have had £500 notes in my hand as well really. Am I being greedy?

you can pick up 1997 lpg'd grand cherrys from about £1400 and they will do about 400,000 miles before they are broken (regularly serviced with usual rear diff/front diff problems)

search on eblag there are quite a few

I would have thought you would have got a fair bit of money back on the deal - known faults and no LPG (£1200/1500?)

Hmmm, the abs light is on you say.Unless it is an obvious loose connection somewhere or a dirty sensor it could be costly to get it fixed at a dealer (3 hours labour for mine!) and also it is a fail at an mot if the light is on.so in theory it wont pass an mot at the moment ,dealer trying to sell unroadworhy vehicle, if trading standards pay him a visit!!!!worth at least a grand less i'd say.

In fairness the dealer said that it he would put a fresh MOT on it so the ABS light and warped discs would be his problem. All acedemic now as i'm definitley not gonna have it, thanks to everyones advice.

I'm still gonna keep looking for a Grand Cherry though.

things aint to bad, could be better. you could have had my 1996 GC (with new rear axle) for £1200 just before xmas when i swapped it for an alfa gtv (over 40 now so in mid life crisis ) and would have swapped it for a disco as well with a few squids thrown your way.

You can get 4l jeeps for nothing now. that seems very high for something that rots away so quick.
If it broke, I wasn't there.

Damn right IOM, I regretted buying the Discovery as soon as I drove it off the forecourt, It's really not me at all. The worst part is it's got one of those flappy stick things and an extra pedal next to the brake pedal, and when I drive it I keep having to press the stupid pedal and waggle that bloody flappy stick around, YUK!!! :x

100mph in third @8500rpm god that engine is awsome  (its been balanced and mildly tuned)
