Swivel housing oil.
« on: January 21, 2008, 20:24:58 »
My swivel oil is weeping a bit and I havent got round to replacing it and putting 1 shot grease in because I am petrified on how to do it!

For the time being I occassionaly when I get worried it is running out of ep90 I top it up.

This time I think I got a bit carried away and filled it right to the top. Is this a major issue?

I have a long journey on thurs and friday will be towing a new caravan so dont want to have anything happen really, not with the caravan on the back!

Take out the filler and level plugs, and let it settle to the right level.
With the level plug out, it shouldn't be possible to over fill, however, if you just top up with the level plug in, you chance over filling, and that's not a good idea.

The filler plug is near the top. at half way up is a smaller plug that's the level plug and the drain plug is at the bottom (and the same size as the level plug).

Add oil into the filler ntil it runs out of the level plug.

If you are loosing a lot then you're better off with one-shot.  If it's in a tube then it's the correct dose, otherwise you need to add a littl eat a time until oil runs from the level plug.  If you don't drain all the EP90 then it's not as effective at stopping leaks.

DO NOT OVERFILL, it'll end up in your wheel bearings.

Or try this.  It's better than one-shot as it still gets into the top swivel bearing, but it's tacky so it doesn't leak.  It's what I use.

so I need to find the level plug then. Is it the same side of the swivel as filler hole, ie the front of the car or at the back? I am doing the near side front wheel. I had a feelng there must be one, somewhere. I hate playing around in those areas as brake parts are there and I hate fiddling with anything near brakes.

Oh eck, this isn't going to be pretty me thinks :(

Front, about in the same place as the steering arm IIRC.

mate, really dont worry about doing this job. Ensure you have completely drained it first and put the drain plug back in. It should take you no longer than about ten mins to do it. As for worrying about the brakes, as long as you dont get any on the brake disk you cant go wrong.

You see the big bolt head that is the lock-stop in the middle of the picture? well right underneath it is the level plug.

Do you mean this bolt that is well and truly rusted so much there is not much of a bolt head left on it and removing it could be at my peril and may never go back in again. That bolt you mean?  ;)

Well as it is weeping nicely some of should have drained out by now anyway. I think I will gamble on the ep90 getting into the bearings option and live with it. If I muck it up today I have no back up option of another vehicle to go and get my caravan tomorrow and I cant muck the seller about any more. already cancelled on him once.

That bolt is staying put!

For it's worth I just get the LR one shot grease tubes for all my Discos. No worries then and it's recommended by LR here.

If the hubs are empty then the one-shot tubes are the correct dose.

Alternatively, if you don't have ABS then you can use the drive member as a level-plug ;)

That Lucas hub oil is mint, I use it all the time.

James, if you can't get any of the plugs out you can also fill the hub by removing the drive-member (assuming youdon't have ABS) and that way you get one-shot inside the CV joint straight away.

I do have ABS.

Getting the oil in is dead easy. A spanner and loose a bit of skin off knuckles gets the filer plug undone nicely!! It is the drain plug and level plug that have more rust on than the titanic!!!

I have been told not to put 1 shot in until I am 100% sure that every last drop of ep90 is out otherwise the grease wont work.I could go for the gamble option and drive around until I feel the hub will sieze up (if they do that, I dunno, what does happen if it has no oil in?) or get the rusted drain plug out. either way, at this moment in time I am not putting it to high up on list, but it is high up on would like to get it sorted, by someone else

IIRC with ABS it's probably important there is some oil in there for the driveshaft bearings which is a roller bearing.
