time to do the cam belt

 :shock: now iv been told this is pretty easy on the 200tdi but somehow i dont belive them,iv got the day off ill and im back and forward to hereford next week so i better get it done, is there any reason why i cant cut the existing belt lengthways through the middle so i have half a belt holding the timing, and then i can slip the new belt half on, then cut the old half a belt so the new one slides fully on, does this make sence  :lol: any advice welcome, cheers

Hi

There a way to lock the fuel pump, a tdc mark on the camshaft and on the crank pulley, so no need.

I know this is for 300tdi but the markings are trhe same on my 200tdi.

Only problems I have had so far have been the amount of locktite on the pulley bolts and getting the damn crank bolt out. The seal on the cover is important so I'd get both cover and water pump gaskets, might get away with instant gasket though.

hi, its says not to use this for a 200. i need my belt done too but am unsure about following this guide.

Yes you can do it that way...., as long as you ensure the following.....

That the fuel pump is locked off in the correct position with suitably sized drill bit. That the crank and camshaft's are aligned correctly. Also, you need to ensure that the correct flywheel timing mark is indicated.

Trouble comes when you have to release the tensioner to get the hew belt on ...., the belt can move....., remember the new belt is that and the old one has stretched...... and you can only get one pair of hands in there at a time....

If your taking all that time to strip it, I would recommend that you change the tensioner pulley at the same time and therefore, splitting the old belt is not an option in this case.

Re gaskets....., good old mastic/instant gasket will do........

well its done...... the good news is that she does run....... the bad news is that she sounds like a tank :shock: woke a few neighbours up :oops:, is this just diesel knock or am i goin 2 have to rip it apart again because someting is slightly out???

iff its any help im sure the timing pins are 9.5 mm for the deisel pump and 3/16  for the flywheel but you will have to make a plug oout of a gas fitting then sleeve it with 3/16 brake pipe or something.  iff its deisel knock could be pump out  iff you try the drill it has to be bang on dont force anything as you can damage the end of the pump. alan.....

If your engine is clattering, then you may have put the cam/crank timing advanced by one tooth. Retarded by one tooth makes the engine run very softly and smoke a lot.

As Les has said, it's probably slipped a tooth....., as I indicated it could do...., new for old and all that.

Did you double check the flywheel alignment when you set the crank/cam alignment?

Theres two marks on there that look the same, but they are different.....

Mine is now done. Noticed that there is a LOT of conflicting info on the net about the cam pulley. Runs sweet as a nut now :)

mines running beutifully now, yea i think it must of slipped a tooth, ended up snapping a drill bit and losing half behind the pulley :evil: but got it out in the end, didnt think it would be that easy to be honest  ;) cheers for the advice

How? 9.5mm isnt an easy size to break.
