Was there no bell ringing when they were pulling your leg like that??

I've never heard of tank tracks being turned around depending on operational circumstances...

I'll check with my cousin though ( He's  REME Recovery Mechanic and tracked vehicles are his bread and butter)

and just as I typed that he disappeared off-line to do his job as duty driver....dammit

Never heard that one. On most tanks the tracks are designed only to run one way. Some tracked vehicles have a choice of track, ie mainly for road use or mainly for off road use. But I think someone was pulling your leg - could be wrong off course. We'll wait to see what REME say.

The only part of a track I've known turned were the bushes, like with any chain only one side of the bush wears, so turing them round effectively doubles their life. However thats a lot easier said than done.

Unfortunately 2 peneth worth doesn't get you a lot these days what with inflation and all, at work its just one mug of hot water out of the machine.

i was a VM(a) (tank mechanic) in the REME for 6 years and unless theyve changed things in the 5 years since i left we never once changed tracks round and as far as i remember they only run one way. so sorry woody, looks like your leg was being pulled!

On the M60 tanks, the pads on the tracks were non-directional, and you could mount them either way, but most other tracked vehicles I've worked with had a sort of pattern on the pads, and were one way only. I've never heard of anyone turning the track around, though, you only change the track when it wears (or you need to work on the wheels), and it is a bloody difficult and arduous job, so you only do it when necessary.
