 WOW - absolutely stunning efects ..who needs Hollywood.
as a side note my Great Uncle was there during the original landings - and was reduced to tears watching Private Ryan, said it was so realistic and brought back memories he thought had long gone..
Would love to visit the landing sites one day..least we can do to remember them. :police:

I did the Normandy landing beaches in 2005. It was awesome to see what had been achieved, especially at Omaha, where every thing was against the troops, especially no armoured support and the German use of terrain.

Perhaps it would be worth organising a MC trip over there. There are good guide books available. The ferry from Portsmouth to Le Havre is fairly cheap and there are plenty of campsites around that area. It could be cheaper if it was done in the late season, say September, it would still be warm enough to camp or caravan if needed. A week would be enough to do the area with a couple of sites of interest each day. From what I recall the trip with ferry and campsite cost was in the region of £300 for two adults. Not bad really.
The ideal time to go would be June time, but it would be packed over there. I've seen loads of the restored WW2 vehicles going out from Portsmouth. An incredible sight!

The Normandy beaches have become very congested in recent summers. I managed to visit most of the sites before Saving Private Ryan hit the cinemas and they're well worth the trip. My Grandfather landed there a couple of days after D day, having previously evacuated from Dunkerque with all the men under his command!

Thats amazing, and they say the camera never lies..

I was fortunate enough to be on the crew of a Landing craft that took part in the 60th anniversary events in 2004, I had a lump in my throat as we apprached Arromanches (Gold) beach at high speed.  It was very moving to think that 60 years perviously thousands of soldiers had made the same trip, with two vital differences..

They were being shot at and were going in at low water.

We approached at high tide so when we got to the beach we only had 50-75 meters to go before we were in the town, at low water they would have had a massive beach to cross, as well as all the obstacles shown in that video.

Very doable even in the summer. Ferry to Cherborg is £163 at end of July start August for our 110. We are tagging a night onto our trip to france this summer and staying in Normandy. Campsite cost is under £20 and is 300yds from the Pegasus Bridge museam. One night and 2 days isnt enough to see all what we want to see but will fit in Pegasus bridge, omaha and that tapastry place.

I'd forgotten that 2005 was pre-digi camera for me, so I've just dusted off the scanner...

Ramped Craft Logistic on Gold beach (the sand wasn't really purple, the scanner just seems to have thought it was)

Sherman (I think) tank drives off a landing craft and onto the beach for the first time in 60 years.

Thats really is amazing, I work in TV and love watching this stuff, well done to the guys they did a great job. In 2004 I and a freind bought a 1944 Leyland Hippo, spent 9 months and a winter restoring it in an open barn freezing cold at times to full fill a boy hood dream and visit the beaches in a ww2 vehicle. Through our hunting for parts we met the son of a Hippo driver, we found his unit and marked the lorry as his, he named his "Bermondsey Kid" which he wrote in chalk on the bumper on the LCT, when he and his family were in Juno Beach museum where he came in on D+2 we parked it outside and gave him quiet a surprise.

We had the trip of a lifetime, it was the 60th Anniversary, we maxed at 28 mph, did 8 miles to the gallon, took 10 days to do it, met American & British vets, ate dinner with veterans, met Paras from Pegasus Bridge who where in the glider landings, visited all the main sites, slept in the truck on Omaha, gave one or two veterans great memories, opened the door to one families history that they never knew existed, heard lots of truely amazing stories that I shall never forget and made freinds with many people.

If you get a chance go, if you dont, make a chance, the guys who came back and the guys who did'nt we owe an great deal to, and please if you do go pay a thought and a visit to the German cemetaries. Ohama Cemetary will move you a great deal, its immaculate and very large. Ferry to Cherbourg and take the places in as you go, or book the chunnel early.

I have a whole photo album if anyone wants to see it, just let me know before hand, details of the days I run in the Events and play days section here, I'm the guy on the gate at Sibbertoft Sundays.

Exactly. In the incredibly unlikely event of war with a mainland European power it would take hours to cave it in. The planners must have considered the threat from the USSR at the time of building.

I could say what I think is responsible for the fact that this is one of the longest periods of peace in European history but it'd veer towards the political and quite probably cause a row!

yeah, they thought that in 1939 when hitler invaded poland, just because they use different tactics these days doesnt mean that they cant fight a war without troops on the ground in the country that they are fighting in,the chunnel makes it a whole lot easier and it wont be the major superpowers that fight itll be some nutter dictator in an unknown country that kicks off...............america thought they were infallible, any body remember the twin towers?,it just seems ridiculous that in ww2 the only reason that hitler didnt get onto this island is because he couldnt get over the channel (if he had,we would all be calling each other "mein herr" by now") and then the idiots go build a channel tunnel thinking "oh were alright, itll never happen again".............ha! dont tempt fate

We live in a very different world at the moment and if anyone wanted to invade us it would not be through the channel tunnel if they had any sence, It would be a doddle for us to destroy theit entire army with one push of a button as the came through.

It would be an air invasion. However I do not believe Europe is a threat to the UK.

Errrrrr... whats a couple of jet liners crashing got to do with the channel tunnel? Are the nasty guys planning to bring some dismantled 747s through it?

To stop being silly for a moment. Have you considere what you have written? You are proposing that some "nutter dictator in an unknown country" succesfully invades france. Occupies it. Sends an invasion army through a 30 odd mile tunnel that is not designed for cars/trucks/tanks, that at most could take 3 tanks a breast burst through the other side into england in a surprise attack?

I really do hope you posted your 'opinions' to get a response and not that they are your true opinions.

Any invading army would only get bogged down on the French side, by all the illegals hanging onto the tanks.
