Landy gearboxes

Yet another newbie, does anyone out there know the correct position that a landy gear box should centre at?
Is it between first and second as mine does or third and fourth as I thought every other  five speed box invented was supoosed to centre at?

Please be gentle with me I only bought my first  '93 landy 2.5 TDi  three weeks ago and we're still getting used to each other.

My gearbox  seems to opt between first and second but block changes can be acieved with gentle pressure over to the off side: fifth to third for example without causing any dramatic grinding noises. Also should first and reverse be so damn close together???

When working properly the 'box should be centeew sprung, ie 3rd and 4th.  There are 2 springs involved and they can be found under the centre console in a box atop the gearbox extension.  A failry heavy one for 5th and a bit weaker one for 1st/2nd plus reverse has a sprung plunger, assuming it's the LT77 you have.  AFAIK R380s are very similar.

Had this on my landie when i bought it - turned out that a piece of metal on the  bias spring plate on top of the gearbox had snapped off. wasn't a massive problem until i went round the abingdon off road course and the piece of metal moved and blocked 4th!

Its a relatively easy job to fix, the bias plate is only a few quid but its a bit involved to replace as you have to dismantle the centre console down to the top of the gearbox (including drilling out rivets) once there its about 4 bolts - watch out for the springs as they are under some tension!

Okay, I understand what a spring does but what's a bias plate??

Cheers for the help, guys  but it's beyond my saavie having never even looked at the inner workings of a gear box never mind tried to repair one.  Guess this one is going to cost me... :wink:

handily this is all bolted to the top of the gearbox so you don't need to break the box open. Bias plate is the plate that the springs that keep the gearbox between 3rd and 4th when in neutral are bolted to. because of a breakage in the plate (i'm assuming!) the stronger 5th gear spring is pushing the gear lever across to between 1st and 2nd. its a relatively common problem due to the way the plate is made but quite an easy (and very satisfying!) fix - this has a bit more detail:
