200 / 300 axle

Hi Guy's,
              as my axle/hub decided to completely collapse yesterday on my way home  :twisted:, i think I may need to change the axle if not at least the complete hub assay & half shaft,

My question is will a 300 axle fit ???, I know the 300 has one brake pipe & the 200 has 2 so can i fit the 300 axle & the change over the brake discs & callipers from the 200 axle  :?

AFAIK yes, though I do know the disk offset on the front of a 300 TDi is different to the back ( I had thought they were the same disk), but I'm sure the callipers are the same casting on 200s and 300s

RRB  - are  defender axles / halfshafts / diffs any stronger than disco ones? As per my recent predicament i've been offered a defender diff (currently fitted to a '92 200) for a reasonable price. Thought it might be worth considering as a stop-gap solution.

BB the 300 axle will slide under a 200 car no issues, make sure you use the 300 radius arms & just swap the 200 calipers over onto the 300 axle,

Sure you nont need to just strip it down and replace the barings? Easyer and cheeper than a hole axel swap?

Stub axles are shorter on a 300Tdi, mud shield mounting points are different,  the trailing arm brackets have little half moons sectioned out of themto allow a bit more articulation and the caliper bolt thread is also different.

If you stick the full rolling axle under, it is a straight swap. Start swapping bits over and you may have to fiddle things around a bit. Either way, a trip to the local fastener shop for bolts is about as tricky as it gets.

If the question is will a 300 axle fit a 200, then yes bolt right on, discs and as stu has said you may need to use the 300 caliper bolts,depending on chassis number you get them off, but your 200 calipers will line up, even imperial calipers fit, as i have them on a 300 disco axles under my hybrid, Not a problem for a man of your caliber john :afro:

The diff is the same item AFAIK but the CV joints used on the 200TDi Defender are about the strongest stock items I'm told.  The hubs/stub axles and CVs are longer than a on the RR/Disco axle and though they use the same wheel bearings they are further apart, making them 'stronger' too.

Once assembled the noticeable difference is how far out the end of the drive member comes, you can't fit alloys straight on.

If alloys aren't an issue then the 200 Defender axle might be worth considering, I know the axle casing might be different but I found all the guts go straight into a RRC axle without disturbing the swivels.

It's the rear anyway, but I think my question has already been answered. All the differential units are the same.

To be fair I didn't see which vehicle the last one came out of, could have been a dogged 300,000 miler, I'll never know. The price you pay with 2nd hand though, isn't it?
