No spark at coil
« on: January 30, 2008, 16:36:52 »
Houston we have another problem.....

Basically, the car cut out today & refuses to restart.
I've checked fuel etc, but it's not getting a spark from the coil.
Tried another coil i know is good, but it's lifeless !!! The king lead is relatively new.
I need some more pointers please guys.

Right has your dizzy got an ignition pack screwed to it? or is it behind the passenger head light?

Only reason i ask is, there is a common fault with dizzy mounting ignition amps, they tend to blow due to a bad earth between the dizzy body and the engine block, replace the amp pack and run a seperate earth wire from dizzy to body,

Had a customer who had been to a very well known landrover garage in the midlands for a dizzy fault, he had to pay for 3 amp packs after they all went bang, disco was recovered to me, thus found the earth fault, spoke to landrover tech guys and they had came across the same problems, so there you go, and my customers disco has done over 35.000 now with no problems, hope that helps, id check all the simple stuff first, the three wires to the dizzy pack should have 12v with ignition on, earth, and switch back to coil, good luck

Nope, not checked that far as it's stuck at the side of the road 5 miles from my house & i can't get it recovered, period !
I do have a spare amp pack to try, after all it's only 2 bolts.
Failing that, looks like a phone call to a sparky.
Thanks again guys    :D

When you put the amp pack on, put a blob of grease behind it and like EE said, an earth wire under one of the bolt heads.

Well grease is not correct to be honest, you should use the chemical heat compound that comes with the amp pack. grease wont conduct heat as good as it needs to, have found this out the hard way when then get hot and blow :-o

Granted. I said grease as we all have some and anything is better than air, even mud or spit, and the silicone compound (white greasy substance) is little use once it's dried out.  You can buy it from Maplins and some computer shops though, it's the same stuff you use on processor heatsinks.

Works just as well dried out as not :)

proper way to do it is to prepare both surfaced, alchol, then very very very fine sandpaper, then another clean then just enough paste on bith sides, it shouldnt squidge out too much. Too much is as good as none.

I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

It's a 98 Disco 1 & it has the remote amp pack.

Eventually had it recovered to the garage after 3 days of lying by the side of the road.
The only fault he can find is that there's virtually no current coming from the camshaft sensor ( 3ohms) & has asked me to get another dizzy.
Anyone have a working dizzy that they could sell me ??

No probs.  I think I saw one at the unit, but I'd have to go over and find it that's all.
