Bad Sign - Wet Road Under Engine!
« on: January 31, 2008, 00:25:42 »
Hades my Disco tonight decided to dump his coolant out through the water pump gland.  :'(

Happily I made it home and have a water pump in the garage!

As long as I remember to ermove the viscous coupling as if I was tightening it... everything should go according to plan!  [-o<

Wish me luck folks and get out the land rover floor mats and get down on yer knees for me!  [-o< :-$ [-o< :-$ [-o<

On the upside... there isn't much of the car I've not had to work on.... so my mechanics apprecticeship must be about over!

Thanks boddle...

Off to a bad start, of the two pumps I have in the garage (must get them back to Die Bok) neither of them fit! Happily my favourite Douglass Motors have one on the shelf so... it'll be public transport out ther and back today (Pthewwww! **Gobs on floor in disgust!**).

Also, none of my tools fit the nut... and can I find someone who knows what a viscous fan spanner is?! Finally went through Draper website and phoned round their stockists. One near me can get one in by about 4pm... so I'll be working late or off tomorow again!  :(

Never mind... one more shiny bit on board...!

mine did the big waterpump wee a few months back, so much quieter now with it done! and at £30 a pop, not work even thinking about radweld!

also the alternator can be moved using a ratchet in that square hole.. and not a hammer and chisel as most garages (and former keepers) seem to use! :-o

and be ware of brittle cowls...! and when it does snap, cable ies/self tappers are the easiest answer! ;)

It has been said that, given enough time, a million monkeys bashing at a million typewriters would eventually produce the complete works of Shakespeare. Thanks to the Saxo forums, we now know this to be wrong

Thanks for the tips Ja....

More problems hoever, today has been all but a write off. The spanner didn't arrive till about 4pm... then it was too bloody big! Managed to find a mate who dropped one off the right size and finally... the fan unit is off and so is the pulley.

The pump itself is proving a little stubborn.

All but two bolts are out. The one that anchors the stay for adjusting the alternator belt sheeared in the hole.   :(

The long one, I think second from last on the bottom... refuses to turn...  :'(  Even had my long breaker bar on it to try and gently coax it out.... but got to what felt like the limnit before it let go and I chickened out! Last thin I want is a long bolt sheared as well!

Calling a mobile mechanic tomoorow to come deal with the bolts so I can get on with it!

The saga continues...!

I managed to find a mobile Land Rover specialist not too far from Rugby (Coalville in Leicestershire) who arrived today and dealt with my two wayward bolts. (See this post for a recommendation)

Will had to use a variety of tools and techniques... most of which were outside of either my experience or my comfort zone (i.e. Grinding the bolt hole off on the old water pump in situ & using a gas axe in a V8 engine bay!)   :pale:

The two bolts are out and the water pump is off.  8)

It has highlighted another potential problem for the future however. The engine side casting for the water pump is showing significant (?) scarring, I guess from the pump vanes as it wobbled on the spindle.   ](*,)

The pic below shows Will at work and most of our collection of green ovals (1994 RRC parked & SORN'd round the corner!) parked in the street... can't help thinking it looks like a convoy of some kind carring out some running repairs!

Prior to Will's arrival I had gone to my local specialist in Wolston looking for replacement bolts (well, 1x bolt & 1x stud) but sadly they don't hold a stock. So it's another day off on Monday (cus wifey is away with her car), pick up the bolts on Tuesday and fix it on Wednesday! (I aint even trying to fix it in the dark on Tuesday night!)  [-(

Anyway... I'll let you know how it goes... I'm of to figure out how to wire up a couple of electric fans in lieu of the viscous. Well... I do have time on my hands... and since everything is out anyway...

If you are fitting electric fans (TBH I wouldn't bother unless they are cheap) then amongst others I think Wizard sells the adjustable thermostat at sensible money.  I got a fixed one from Merlin Motorsport, to adjust the temp you have to move it down the radiator ;).

You can make 2 fans run twin-speed, you need either 2 thermostat switches, or a dash switch/thermostat or like mine you can have slow speed with engine off and fast with engine on (though I'm thinking fo adding a second thermostat).

Then you need 2 heavy duty relays plus a good change-over relay.  If you want a wiring diagram drop me a PM and I'll scribble it out for you.

P.S> if you can get hold of the thermostat elbow from an A/C/ car it has a thermostat switch already in it.

RRB, the fans are free... fell of the front of my old 84 RRC (Aircon fans). As for the switch, I'd bought one of the XEng  housings that comes with a switch that can controll two fans ate different speeds and temps.

I could however do with some assistance understanding the cisrcuit diagram (see this post).

As for doing without... well... I'd rather have at least something there just in case, and as the front of my beast will be in bits for another couple of days... I figure I might as well!

Thanks for the thoughts though.

If you want to trundle up I'll do it for you.  Meanwhile I'm looking at that diagram, give me a minute or ten ;)
