Fuel Guage adjustment 110 CSW 1985
« on: January 31, 2008, 20:53:54 »
Hi All,

Quicky for you, the fuel guage on my 1985 110 CSW (now 200TDI was 2.5N/A) shows just on the happy side of the red but is actually empty  :( as I've found out whilst driving across the border in Andora thinking I could save my self for the tax free fuel, but very nearly didn't make it ;)

How can  adjust to make it a little more acurate?

Thanks.

Only adjustment would be trial and error taking it out and bending the float lever wire up or down a bit I would think, they aren't adjustable per se.

Thanks Chris

Is there access to the float without having to take the tank off?

Yeah it should be on the nearside of tank. Do this with a empty tank or at least one where the fuel level is below the big hole you're about to make  Disconnect wiring and fuel line,  knock the retaining ring around inside the tabs, remove it along with the seal. You might end up needing a new seal and retaining ring (depends how grotty they are).

Just to add my 2 penneth.  Knowing how guages work there is a chance it won't adjust the way you want it to.  You will have to bend the lower stop on the float travel and even then it may be resing on the bottom of the tank anyway.

If you remove the guage then, depending on what type, you may find it's adjustable.  A hot-wire type guage (laso called bi-metallic) has a heating elemnt wrapped around a bimetallic strip.  Because of how these work they have to be adjustable, I know FORD ones are easliy adjusted with a screwdriver, a bit like adjusting point as I remember :-k

Other than that a small resister in the fuel sender wiring would also bring the guage down.

Remeber that most of these adjustamnets will effect how the guage reads when full, obvioulsy not a huge problem.
