Non 4x4 engine help pleaseeeeee!
« on: February 02, 2008, 00:41:44 »
Ive got me new renault 19 16v and have been playing with it for a week now.  Put some fuel in at Tesco before and it started becoming really sluggish.  The symptoms are like that of a turbo diesel thats turbo has gone tits up and then there is stuttering as well.  Then for about 10 seconds it will run properly again, but then it will run sluggish again for another few minutes.

Any help would be appreciated.

BTW its a 1993 K-reg Phase 2 R19 16v F16.IE engine.

Sounds like an induction leak. Try spraying some carb cleaner around the base of the carb. If it runs better then it needs the gasket replacing. I had a Renault 21 that had your problem. For some reason, the bolts securing the carb would loosen

The 19 16v is multipoint injection, the card models, (all, 5,11,21,25) had issues with the inlet manifold warping and the carb not, and thus you used to add shims under the carb to level it out and re-seal it,

I agree with the basis though, bit of WD or Carbcleaner around will see if there is an air leak (the revs will rise).

I had something similar with my Clio. Eventually, the fault was identified as, get ready for it, the clutch release plate. Some tinkering with it, and the problem was sorted.

I know it sounds weird (it did to me) but I spent ages trying to find out why the engine was losing power.

What they all said, these engines are notourious for manifolds warping. Had a Volvo 240 with same engine that did this.

Ok, well to add to confusion......

I picked it up again from Bettyblue22's house just now (i had to swap cars with her last night as i was running around til gone midnight) and it drove spot on for the first mile, and then started with the bother again :-s

Someone on one of the renault forums said it sounds like water in the spark plug chamber doofer.  Does this sound feasible?

Well had a look in the spark plug wells today and found it to be full of water!

Cant do owt now until i get a torx head set to remove the tortion bar so i can get the plastic lead holder out to get into the well to remove the water

**takes deep breath**

To top that off the halfrauds socket set i bought has failed within 10 mins of use, so that will be going back and i will be using me tool box (was trying the lazy way of not having to search the toolbox for the sockets i needed!)

So will try that and see how it goes lol

If it has a lamda sensor check all the wires for continuity. I had one snap and it did what you describe.

If it is the same as the Renault 18, 19 and 21 then it will be at the top of the gearbox and well hidden. Looks pretty much like an elongated ignition suppressor. Remove the sensor and polish the contact on the tyre sidewall and if that was the cause of the problem it should be a bit better

Good luck
John

Well it seems to be running a bit better now, took it out before and it only did it a couple of times, so am wondering if its crap in the fuel system or not.  Gonna run some redex through it tomorrow and give it a good blast on the country lanes.
