Steering Wheel Wobble, Tyre Balancing

Ive put the Greenway Macho's from my RR classic on the 90 for todays trip to devils pit..

They feel like they are not balanced at all. I cant feel it on the range rover, but it might be because all of the steering components need replacing...

They alloys and BFG AT's are fine at all speeds, but these make the steering wheel wobble at 50mph... Fairly badly.

Do you think somewhere like quick fit will be able to balance them, or am i better searching for a more independent place?

I've got the same problem.I know all Mt's are hard to balance but I'm also have the swivel joints checked to make sure there set right as I'm told this could be the cause

Swivels were changed just before Xmas...

It has to be the tyres, as the other set dont do it.... Ill take it to somewhere tomorrow to get they balanced, although it does mean i need to clean it!

the machos might just bring out the wobble in your range rover. ive never balenced land rover tyres and not had a problem.

hi i have the same tyres as you only put them on 3 days ago and i get the same problem its just because they are mud tyres most seem to do it that i have had,

i wouldn't waste your money with balancing that will do nothing on mud tyres, i got mine fitted by a land rover specialist and they said not to balance them.

I had some BFG MT a few years ago, and they never did it - but i suppose those were new and not a remould.

Its just something im not used to!

of course they will balance, all ours are on 35's bfg muds, and the 110 on 35 " khumo muds are all balanced and drive fine, sometimes they need a fair few weights, but thats why they wobble about if not balanced.

I got my Machos balanced by Buxton 4x4 and they were never a problem.  My BFG M/T are balanced too.

The ones' that give me problems are the Good Year A/T on my LSE, for some reason they won't balance perfectly.

Yes at £5 a wheel they aren't making much money, you'll be there over an hour I reckon.  It's worth going somewhere that knows LRs or at least big 4x4 if you are having this sort of problem.  There are a cople fo places locally I won't use anymore becasue they talk such bull excrement all the time.  Apparently you can't do the tracking onm a LR because it's got a steering box for one :^o

I poped in to a local tyre place tonight as it was on the way home from work and the wobble was starting to annoy me...

Nice bloke - was interested in land rover, and why it was covered in clay!

Took wheels off, removed all weights, tried to fit first one to machine - would it go on.... No.

It would not sit true on the machine, and started to quite silly things like 900 grams of weight to add!

Anyway, he admitted defeat, didnt charge me anything although i expected something as he spent an hour messing about..

Anyway, with no weights added to the wheels they are a thousand times better then they were before.. I can still feel them not right, but it will be ok till i can get to Nene Valley for a look.

Im fairly pleased.

what does 'doesnt sit true' mean, did it not sit central on the spindle, or is the rim buckles / eitherway you aint gonna balance like that.

It would not fit on their machine properly and sat wonky on the central spindle. All the packers and things were not man enough to hold the weight.

They spin fine when bolted to the hub of the 90, so the rims are fine.

Ill get it over to Nene and see what he can do.

I'm guessing they only knocked the lead off one rim to start with.

Is there any chance you swapped the wheels from the rear of the RR to the front of the 90? Normally if the wheels are fine on the RR then in theory they should be fine on the 90 unless you've put the rear ones on the front. If the rear ones had been unbalanced despite having weights on you wouldn't have noticed them on the rear as much as you would on the front iyswim.

No, They were corner to coner from the RR, but all the steering joints have that much play in them i cant see it getting to the wheel!

They removed the weights off all the wheels, and put them back in the same corners as they came from.

Ney mind - its better than it was!

Hope all is well the Clan
