Hi all,
My V8 series 2 Disco is currently dead and lying 200 miles from home. The problem started on Friday night when the battery light came on (its a new battery) after 2 minutes or so it went out when I revved the engine. Then on Saturday morning I set out early hours on a deer Stalking trip. After a few miles I noticed that the battery light was on again but no amount of revving would extinguish it. Due to the time of morning lights heater etc were all on. After a few minutes the lights began to dim and the suspension lights came on followed by the autobox lights flashing followed by ABS light and others. Then the rev counter and speedo stopped working and I began to get a misfire. This all happened within a few minutes and I parked her up. Checking under the bonnet revealed nothing obvious and having been towed back to our digs by a friend we put jump leads on and every thing was fine although the battery light was still on. Alternator I thought and duly removed it to take home to get repaired. The auto electrician has had a look at it and reckons every diode has blown therefor he states he cannot repair it. A new one is obviously needed but I have been cautioned by the auto sparky that I should find the short that caused the problem first. This is where I am confused as if there was a problem elsewhere why has it not manifested itself by other means (eg blown fuse, something not working etc). The alternator had been squealing for sometime and had in the past been treated with copious amounts of wd40. I have stripped it myself and it was best described as moist also one of the brushes has jammed and is nearly gone although it still makes contact.
Anyone got any ideas as to what is going?
Cheers Remmy7
