Jimny arch trimming
« on: February 14, 2008, 10:35:57 »
Wondered if anyone could give me a little help or advice on getting the arches on my Jimny trimmed back to stop the wheels catching.

I bought my Jimny with 3" lift, plently of upgraded suspension parts and all the rest but the guy I bought it off didn't offroad it and therefore he's never had the arches trimmed back so they rub. I've got 215/15 tyres on it and they rub quite a lot so theres no chance of offroading it till this is sorted.

From speaking to a couple of people I believe the easiest thing to do is to have a local bodyshop remove the plastic arch, cut down the wing a bit then trim down the plastic arch and refit. This means losing the inner arch but should give me the desired finish.

Wondered if anyone else had dealt with this problem and had any ideas or suggestions that might help me out.

Steve.

P.s. I know one option is to lift the body on it so that theres a bigger gap to the arches but I wanna try to avoid lifting the body so as to keep the centre of gravity down on it.

Some pics of my trimming. Its easy to do if you have an lectric jigsaw and a steady hand. I'm now running 31" tyres with a 2" lift and extended bump stops - no body lift. When I reattached the plastic arches I used a stong silicon bond to help them stay on.

Thats spot on cheers, going to get a local body shop to do the work but I'll show them the pictures for reference. Don't really have much time to attempt it myself. What have you done with the inner arch? Have you just removed it and left the arch open inside or have you managed to butcher a replacement in?

Looking at the pictures I might have seen your Jimny about, I've seen a green one down your way with big tyres and a snorkel and it looks like that might be yours.

Steve.

Took the inner arch out all together, made up a thin alloy plate to fill in the gap behind the wheel to keep crap out of the doors etc. You will probably need to flatten the seam that sticks out from the main body shell as well, just hammer it flat and reseal/paint.
