took steering box off today and the shaft has snapped in two

must have been a flaw in the manufacture,,,i cannot see how a inch and a quarter solid steel bar could snap half way up the inside of the box like that
will put piccy on soon

theres a lot of torsional stress on the shaft, hence its thickness, and poor maintenance, combined with a hard life can all weaken it.. dry steering for example puts huuuuge amounts of stress on the steering joints... and wears the tyres!

I imagine the previous keeper ignored the leek/play on the premise that it was going for sale soon....

someones life is surely worth a few quid!?

It has been said that, given enough time, a million monkeys bashing at a million typewriters would eventually produce the complete works of Shakespeare. Thanks to the Saxo forums, we now know this to be wrong

landrover wouldnt be interested if it was a brand new motor (speaking from experiance) let alone an old series 1 disco.

Poor maintenance - I cant see how this failure could be connected to that.

gotta be a flaw in the metal
