clutch pedal travel/return

looked a discovery 300 tdi today had a test drive and found the clutch pedal only comes back up half way at first once i noticed this i had a play with my foot on pedal and it seems as if pedal doesnt work clutch untill its about half way down and then stops at same place on return for a second nothing like the clutch  pedal on my 200 tdi 90 which you can feel straight away n returns all way any ides on why iy would do this as thinking of buying a disco for missus know they can suffer from the metal worm

Could be a number of things, master or slave cylinder, pedal return spring (not), faulty fork, iffy pressure plate........
