Sankey Wide Track

Looking to find out about the shocks on these things, they look very much like disco/defender ones, anyone done any work on changing them, or a part number for them?

Mine need replacing

Got to keep the cost down, got a pair of standard disco fronts, they look about the same, both of the old ones are bent where a set of forks were used to lift the damn thing

Its going to be used alright on a lane maintenance day this sunday, so I want a quick fix for now, and look at it again later, loading it full of rock ballast will test it alright though :twisted:

Mind you one thing I did notice was that the manufacturer on the plate was named as Viking, not Sankey, unless they have the contract for these type of trailers, also there are a few variations on the lighting from trailer to trailer, instead of the mil bug eye or rectangular block lighting unit this one as individual lights units which use an old truck rubberlite model plastic cover, that slots into the rubber, no screwing for them at all, and they are return earth electrics

Got any pictures of it?  Viking's not a name I've seen on trailers at work - mind you, I'm not usually looking for them...

Cant place the lights either - last set I saw like that were on the servicing trailer, but they stand out a mile as being totally different..............

i think there were 3 or 4 suppliers of the sankey type trailer, sanker being the main one. but theyall look the same,

Not too bad, sourced the lens covers pretty easily, not quite as deep as the original ones, but do the job, indicator and side light sockets are dual contact, but after repairing the light lead by removing a couple of inches and re joining, they all work ok now on 12v, just need to replace the number light and convoy bulbs

I'll give it a rub down and respray when the weather gets warmer

mines a 'sankey' and it is different to that, the box and chassis looks the same but the light set up is tottaly different, and the towwing gear it tottaly different.

Hobbit - thats not one I've seen before - the draught-eye and damper set-up is very different to 99% of the ones I'm used to over the last 22 years thats for certain.

the lights are common enough kit, but usually found elsewhere such as DAF or DROPS trailers.  the Conti tyres are not that common, but I have seen them around the place, it looks to be a very early hydraulic braked version but in a configuration I've not seen before the rest of it matches - even the position of the squared fog lamps tallys with the older ones but that A frame is definitely way out there!

I mentioned the service trailer earlier - looks like there's one in the top RH corner of the first picture.............

Nice trailer though and it looks like it only really needs a bit of a tidy and good coat of looking at to be good to go.

I've seen the disk braked trailer refered to as Wolf trailers before, with the fog lights I'd guess it's not that old either. It sounds like you have no chassis plates for it though :-k  as my Sankey Rapier has enough data on it to identify what it is.

there is a chassis plate, got the original mil registration number for it too (will post later the number is in my disco, not with me at home at the mo)

The lights (and reflectors) are rubberlite units, tried a local commercial trailer spares specialist near me and they said the lenses that I had with the trailer (2), were of a discontinued type, so the tie in with daf etc could well be,

The jockey wheel lock pin, to swing the unit up is bent and needs a bit of pursuation to release. but its still ok to release on the side clamp and slide it vertical though, but with the lightweight bumperettes they dont give me a sharp reversing angle before the wheel clamps catch on the offside

Spoke to Viking today, they said they did produce these in small amounts, on contract for a firm up in Stirling, after they did the initial order the other firm then took over and left them out of the loop, so they finished doing these about 12 years ago they reckon

Pulled one of the shocks off today, looks like a disco rear one will do the job size and fitment wise, I suppose with the trailer being a leafer, the problem with axle travel wont be so much of an issue, will fit a pair of them and see what happens on sunday, if something gives looking at the mountings it will be the shock that goes first, as they are for nothing it wont matter if one does go

If they are leaf sprung then you won't need anything special shock-wise.

Well, good news, a disco 1 rear shock (with top bush pressed into the shocker eye type) will work as a straight exchange fit no probs :clap:

Manage to scrounge one up yesterday and fitted the damn thing today
