noises from the wheels
« on: February 22, 2008, 13:34:53 »
hi i have been offroading a bit recently and although the car is fine i keep hearing a squeeling from the front wheels, as well as when i turn full lock it starts sounding like its rubbing against something altho i think that is because of the mud because it has happened before, i am very worried about the squeeling from the wheels i think its the bearings and if so does anyone know prices and procedures thankyou if it isnt what else could it be ?? thankyou

Hi,

Could be grit etc rubbing on the brake discs or any number of things, give the area a good clean up and get underneath and take a look for anything untoward.  ;)

The rubbing sounds like your tires are catching on full lock, adjust so they don't.

If your worried always worth taking it to a 4x4 garage or a competent mate to be sure.

Just get underneath and have a good check around to see if anything is caught and dragging against the wheel however the most normal cause for this type of noise is something rubbing against the disc (a stone for instance), this would normally be a constant noise and I would not expect it to be affected by turning the wheel. If you mean the tyres are rubbing against the radius arms on full lock then just adjust them until they don't.

If you suspect it is coming from the front hub you will have to strip it and see if the bearing is dry & starting to sieze up. Do this soon because a siezed bearing is a lot more work (& money) to replace than the cheap & simple job of just replacing a worn one.
