Towing an Automatic ?
« on: February 24, 2008, 10:13:10 »
Meant to ask on a previous thread , what are the problems with towing an auto ? , I just assume , neutral and take it steady ? , can't have engine running (no radiator) so braking / steering will be hard I know .
Cheers

u have to take the wheels off the ground that drive the car as it were because it winds the gearbox and thus if it winds up it will have a hissy fit and throw oil everywhere.

Towing a 4x4 auto?

I think even in neutral you can end up with gearbox problems due to oil not being pumped around, my advice would be to remove a propshaft (or read the manual). Probably the one going to the wheels left on the road, not sure if using a bar or something though.

The official advice is providing you tow no faster than 50KPH (30mph) and no further than 25 kilometres (15 miles) then you shouldn't have a problem

<30mph in the Quattro Manual, seem to recall the Senator was the same too.

No engine drive = no oil and it'll kill the box pretty fast. There is also normally a maximum distance too.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

Hay guys i work for a well known recovery company.
The only safe way to tow this is like a truck. Put it in normal 2wheel drive and remove the rear prop  :P......  (trust dont tow it! i have seen bad things happen :()

That should cut the gear box out all together but if it was a customer car. i would fake the prop out just to be safe
