Have you tried the back door and that price is very steep.

Using the key manually should still work ! and that is normal price for a battery - cost of lead has gone up big style. Be careful with the Halfords one though, the connections aren't necessarily in the correct place. The main dealer is only about £4 more and they fit it for you.

have you not thought to just put jump leads onto it and then unlock it?

Could you jump a positive to the back of the starter main feed and negative to the chassis as that would power the electrics

Check out Paddocks they are doing Red optima batteries for £99 (and i presume +VAT)

As for getting in the vehicle, try the old metal wire coathanger through the door seal to pop open a lock, do you have breakdown like aa or rac they may be able to come out to you and sort it, or a local garage with the sliders to open the door down the window

go below with a torch and a bit of nible fingery....

also try the other doors (passenger and boot) for "openability"

would have thought it would be possible to get the bonnet open fron again underneath, or through the grill?

The locks do seize - I recently had cause to lock mine manually (battery died, would unlock but not start, obviously didn't want to leave it unlocked while going into town for new battery) and the locks were very stiff. Will dribble some WD40 into them when I remember.

Either a jump lead ontot he starter (though IIRC it's not easy to get at on a TDI or if you have electrics on the back (especially if you have 12N and S) then one of the leads will be batery power.

If you don't have a towbar then there is a wire provided in the wiring loom on the back RHS corner for the towbar that is battery live, if you can get the taill light out.
