Bye Bye Virgin :)
« on: March 01, 2008, 19:40:49 »
Sky broadband just came on :)

Virgin, Capped at 4Gb. just did a speed test on it, 1.9Mb down, 120Kb up (thats amazingly poor!)
Then on Sky...

11Mb down, 700K up

No Cap

YAY

Need to turn the Virgin kit off... and burn it.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

Kinda depends on which Virgin package you are on, although I have to say their real life download speeds are regularly only about half of what I'm paying for (8Mb) and their upload speeds are abysmal compared to other ISP's. But, on the up-side, I don't have a BT phone line

Free Satellite TV is far more fun (free as in buying a dish and box and wiring them up). We get all BBC stuff, unfortunately not Channel 4 or five but the weird German stuff you can pick up with the right dish is well worth it. They have a whole channel devoted to their railway system which makes for very restful viewing and beats "reality" TV easily.

Ok, sounds a bit nerdy but which would you rather - gigantic steam engine hammering uphill with clouds of black smoke everywhere and making awesome sounds or Big Brother...

Still happy with my Telewest cable. 3982 kbs down and 326 kbs up on a 4m line. No cab. Torrent all the time without any complaining. Recently had an email letting me know that they are increasing us to 10mb. Works for me!

From what I remember of NTL cable when I was in Manchester, your speeds depended very much on how many others in your area were using the broadband service. What I did like about NTL was when we phoned them to get it setup, gave them the box serial number, they simply asked "Do you have a network card in your PC?", "Yup." "Ok, do you have a network cable?" "Yup." "Right, turn your set top box and PC off, connect them with the cable, turn the box on, then turn your PC on, and you'll be online.". Much better than waiting for stuff to arrive in the post and waiting for BT to enable your line.

On BT here we're getting just under 1mbps on the 1mb service. Need to get broadband sorted at home, thinking of going with Sky.

You think yours is bad, mine is download 583 and upload 243.
talktalk is a pain in the bum and megga slow.
if we get sky internet, is that then through satelite connection, or is it crappy phone line still.
because we are remote the lines are overland and keep breaking in the wind so internet connection is bad at best, id do anything to get a decent conection.
