Thats nothing...

Let me tell you a story thats become a legend amonst traffic officers...

Not sure if it true, but here goes...

There were two opposing shifts on a force based in the south of england and they set a competition to see how far they could drive on a shift. Photos were taken over the months or towns in the UK, some in wales and some in as far as scotland

However one day the competition was won when the two officers produced a photo of then stood at the Eiffel tower, holding a French daily paper in full uniform next to their car!

No not sure if it true, but makes for a good urban legend!
If want to walk it walk it, if you want to ride it ride it just leave me alone to drive it!

I heard a version of that where two Night Duty CID teams, one from the Met and the other from the City of London have a bet to see how far they can get on a nightshift. The C of L team thought they had it in the bag until the Met called up saying they had got to Paris. What the omitted to tell was that they had had a prang on the Paris ring road!
I was told that by an ex C of L DC, who would neither confirm or deny he was on the team involved in the bet.

Going back to the Welsh lads, all I can say is 'silly [!Expletive Deleted!]'. If they had coughed to what they were doing, they may have got away with a disciplinary charge. Trying to lie their way out of it is tantamount to putting a gun to your head and pulling the trigger.

'Out of Force' enquiries?
All parties got busted and sent to the furthest flung corners of the Met empire apparently.

To read it is amusing but as stated above they are there to do a job not to see how many gamnes they can play during a shift. Had there been a requirement for them to attend a call then it would have been very questionable, my thing is through why didnt there control realise they were for one not in radio contact or that they had in effect disappeared.

Could have started a big police hunt had it gone horribly wrong

by the sound of it there was only 1 car on a day trip at the time, so there would be more on duty to help poeple,
but half the time when you need them they dont turn up for a day or so anyway.lol

While I have made a couple of replies to the post, I will just add that I do agree with the last couple of comments. It is potentially putting peoples lives at risk and being employed to do a responsible job, means just that.  The actions of a couple of numpties has cast a bad light on all other officers.
I am surprised by the fact that their vehicle would appear not to be fitted with an in car data recorder/satelite locator system, as all ours are. If it was, then why wasn't that picked up earlier?
Waste of a job and pension. More fool them.

We used to have a great game when I was working in an outdoor centre in Scotland. On the weekends that there was no work we would each hitch hike away from the centre as far as we could and get back in time for work on Monday

To prove where you had been you had to send a postcard back to the centre. It was great fun with postcards coming from Glasgow, Edinburgh etc, we even had one lad reach London. Then me and a mate got the furthest.....we got to France by getting a lift in an artic!! Unfortunately we lost as we didn't make it back in time for work

In all seriousness, that may well be a prime example of sods law. I could almost guarantee that when I stood in a queue in a chippy to get some scran, by the time I got to be served, a shout would come in. The alternative would be sitting at a 'Road Traffic Collision Cluster Site' providing a visible prescence to 'calm traffic', munching my sausage and chips, again a 999 call would come in.
I agree with Boggert, they may well have been on the way to a shout. It would have been worse if the driver had been sucking on a shake and scoffing a burger!
