One of my farmer mates runs his 90 all the time with muds on the back and ATs on the front.

Its sod all to do with smoother running on tarmac, its about grip! When he tows (regularly) he really would have a hard time stopping with muds all round, especially in the wet, the advantage having ATs on the front for these situations is amazing. On the other side, he is obviously regularly off road, so the muds come into their own then!

What, what you on about!

A good quality set of MT's such as BFGoodrich MT's drive very well on tarmac, smooth, quiet and grippy.

I, and several friends have used them for years without problems. Many MT's are even suitably speed rated.

You should not run different types of tyres front to bad, it is not supposed to be good for the transmission.

was it you who wrote that advert!!!!!

Provided the tyres on the front and back are the same size (i.e. diameter) it won't harm the transmission at all.

Yes BFGoodrich MT's drive very well on road even in the wet, but have you tried an animal trailer behind you with a few big bullocks in there on the way to market and doing an emergency stop??? I've been with him when its happened once and its a bit exciting!! At least with the AT's on the front you get a bit more grip and directional stability.

There's a few farmers and shoot transporter's around here that run MT's on the front and Simex ET2's on the rear
Again, its a grip thing

My claims to transmissin damages come from mainly cars and fake 4x4's i.e. suzukis. I always was led to believe that you need to constantly rotate tyres (every 6K) not only to maintain tyre wear but more importantly because on a 4x4 you will run one set of axles a=faseter tha the others and that this was not good.

I always heard that you had to have the same type of tyrs due to rolling diameter and wear rates. After all, 6-8mm tread depth difference, entirelly possible on MT's would equate to a reasonable difference when m,ultiplied by m,iles.

Am i wrong on this one??

I think the transmission damage thing is more likely on vehicles like Freelanders or anything else with viscous couplings that bring 4wd in automatically. Older vehicles with mechanical centre diff lock (like Disco 1s and Defenders) won't have that problem as they won't misinterpret the differing propshaft speeds as wheelspin and lock up.

Question 1 - why are suzuki's fake 4x4's
Question 2 - what do you do as regards swapping tyres around with direction specific tyres like Kuhmo's?

n if you think my Suzuki is a fake 4x4 I challenge you to follow me n not get stuck.

Although you are correct in saying that tyres of different size can cause transmission damage. If you fit tyre of a different rolling radius, even front to rear, then the diffs will be working overtime to allow the wheels to turn at different speeds. Even tyres with the same given size on the side wall may have a different rolling radius. Tyre manufaturing rules allow for up to a 10% varience in width and radius for a given size. But as long as the tyres are the same diameter then theres no problem fitting all terraines front and Mt's rear.

This is very true when i worked at land rover there was an electronic control unit that was letting the rear wheels travel faster than the fronts, made in very interesting in the wet and braking hard!!!

before we go any further lets not fight about suzuki Vs. LR, like everyone else i have seen Suzukis go further than Unimogs and Ford Ranger's go further than Landys, it just depends on who's driving it and were you are!! [-o<

I have seen a completly standard Mk3 astra go further than a landrover, and i am not joking, doesnt make it a better off roader however does it.

Glaggs, it would be an absolute pleasure however i have just sold my 300tdi Disco so am unable to take you up on the offer.

You are welcome to come out in my GV though and watch it bog down and ground out on a farmers track with slight ruts. Then you would probably see my point. Especially if a freelander, which is also a vehicle i would term a soft roader, was infront of me as it would have no problems nogotiating it.

I would probably agree with you ref. your GV, but that doesn't make all Suzuki's fake offroaders. Also didn't I read some where that landrover carefully studied the Vitara before building the Freelander? I don't want to start a Landy v Suzuki slagging match - I own a Jimny and A Disco and regularly go off roaging with all makes and models - but did find your Fake off roader comment a bit too close.

I dont really know what to say. All i can say is that from my experience landrovers have always been better. The only decent Suzukis i have seen were the SJ's and even half of them were moddified a great deal and certainly not in standard form.

I will bow to your knowledge but will just say that i would really like to see a "normal" not 20 year old or heavilly modded suzuki that is good off road.

If it exists i would probably buy it as the build quality and price would no doubt be better than Land Rover.

The were looking at the Toyota RAV 4 Not the Vitara.

 Land-Rover Vs Suzuki
Depends on conditions what is better than what, how modified, how good the driver the Tyres suitability for the conditions many more factors(muds don't normally work well in sand).

Don't forget Top Gears face off between the New Range Rover and the Fiat Panda. The Fiat got out of the quarry well enough and was only a couple of seconds behind, and that was down to not having a long enough wheelbase for one particular ridge.

We all choose our vehicles for diferent reasons - then go around believing they are the best.

In fairness Boddle I think Landrover looked at all the existing 'soft roaders' befor begining the freelander project.

My final comment - 'different tools for different jobs. I wouldn't want to travell 500 miles for a camping hoiliday with the dog and family in the Jimny, but I also wouldn't try and negotiate the ruts and trees of Tong in the Disco and not expect to end up stuck or worse. I enjoy both vehicles for different reasons, and I'm greatful to have the choice as to what I drive and when.

I'm getting quite alarmed at what I'm reading here, fitting ATs on the front because they brake better when towing   ever heard of a jack-knife :?

M/T are slightly bigger because they have a deeper tread, anyone donew the maths though, it's not a a massive amount (unless the M/T are remoulds) but it's enough.  LR recomend that all 4 tyres are the same and are replaced in sets.  Why do you think they said that?  bit of space left in the manual?

Fair enough =, you had your final comment. I will have mine. You didnt answer my question. What suzuki, curently in roduction, without mods etc etc etc can compete with a defender, disco range rover or even a free nalder.

Sorry, a std JImny will go any where a std Disco will go and probably further than a freelander. How do I know - saw one enter a local trial event on road tyres. Didn't win but didn't come last either. As for Vitara's or SJ's, don't know - only seen modded ones perform. A std G-wagon will probably beat most other 4x4's as it comes fitted lockers all round etc.

One thing you should learn joining an all makes club is to reserve judgement on other makes.  Fortunately I kept some of my (ill conceived) prejudices to myself in favour of seeing where the ground really lay.

I'm continually surprised at how close the abilities of standard cars of all makes really are, tyres are often the biggest deciding factor, well that and driver ability ;)

I think sometimes that if I were to buy a 4x4 purely on what I read on paper, it might not be a LR.

Weigh up buying costs, service costs, insurance,  fuel economy, performance and ability,  My trucks do everything I could want of them, with plenty of overlap, but Blue is the out and out off-roader, modyfied for the role, the LSE is the consumate motorway muncher and caravan tug, the TDi is the family car and runabout.

I try as much as possible to avoid criticising other people for dissagreing in their choice of car, I don't live their life so I'm not in the best position to judge.  Each to their own and if I have ever given someone the impression that I think otherwise then I appologise :)
