v8 with no spark
« on: March 02, 2008, 22:46:07 »
Been out in my disco all day and it broke down at the petrol station on the way back! Switched it off and no it wont start, all wiring, fuses etc seem fine but it hasnt got a spark. Tried everything i can think of but no joy and the search button doesnt help too much either.

Anyone got any ideas?

Gavin.

Have you been anywhere with high humidity? Maybe near a jet wash, or taken it out in the rain

I would check leads etc as it is possible that one has gone?

What year is it?

If it is 1994-1998 V8 then it could be alarm spyder playing up and thinking the car is being stolen so it shuts down all sparks, fuel injection and pump but allows the car to turn over.

Bit more info, the battery was dying on the laptop last night!

Its a 95 3.9 v8, and had done a full days off roading with lots stopping and starting. The engine had probally only run 10 minutes from the last time of being switched off and it was all on smooth roads. It had a good covering of wd40 but no joy. Someone else has suggested the spider but where would i find it and what problems would i be looking for?

The breakdown guy said it was more than likely the dizzy, but at nearly £150 for a new one this will be one of the last things i try.

Cheers

Gavin.

You don't nee the whloe dizzy, probably just the black box on the side of it, otherwise get a S/H one.

The spyder is hidden behind the middle of the dash board and you need to remove the dash to get access to it. If it has failed, it looks like the dizzy, the coil and th efuel injection systems has failed. Drop me a PM and I will tell of oa quick fix to get it started if it is the spyder.

Had a good look at it yesterday. Had the spider out and there was a dry joint on it so i have re soldered it but it still wouldnt work.
Then I double checked everything  and sat down for a half hour with the wiring diagrams and there is a black wire from the alarm to the coil which had no power. I hooked up a temporary 12v feed and it fired up first time  :)

Any ideas on this one? And is the spider the same out of a tdi?

Hi Gav,

you have found the short term solution; I drove my V8 around for over 6 months with a temporary 12v feed from the battery (via a switch on the dash and a fuse in the link). You could have a long term problem with this because the car has a 9V coil.....

I then had the LR spyder mod fitted for about £200 which includes a little dongle that you have to wave about over a secret location.

Been running now for about 4 years with no probs.

£200 to sort that out?

I would rather get a step down converter to take 12v to 9v!

Failing that i will get the lead from landrover to replace the whole spider.

Gavin.
