when does your abs light turn off
« on: March 09, 2008, 09:45:22 »
i put my disco in for an mot yesterday and one of the things it failed on was abs light showing a fault but the light goes off when i pull forward a few feet which i thought was normal.
so i told him that it goes off when you set off but he told me the light should go off after three seconds and that there is a fault is this true?

When you switch the ignition on the light should come on and then go out for 1/2 to 1 second before coming on again. If it doesn't go out for that short period then there is an ABS fault. It should then go out once the vehicle is travelling at more than (about) 5mph. Again, if it doesn't go out there is a fault.

If you have the owners handbook then the description is on Page 39. I'll happily email a pdf copy of the handbook to you if you pm me with your email address.

i just looked in my manual and its on a different page (30) and it says:

the light illuminates when the starter switch is turned on as a bulb check
and extinguishes once the vechile has reached 5 mph.
if the light illuninates whilst driving, there is a fault with the system

so reads the same as yours so i think i might have to take the book with me and prove him wrong so i expext after proving him wrong he will fail it on somthing else
cheers for the offer of the pdf though i nearly took you up on it as i couldnt find mine

Hi,
My ABS light (when you turn the ignition on) goes on, blinks off once then stays on until you move the car. If you do not move it will not go off.

You might also want to refer him to the testers manual ~ http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_340.htm

I has this same problem a coupe of years ago. as yours my ABS light goes out after reaching 5 MPH, fortunately i had my manual with me during the MOT and after pointing it out to the tester he passed the MOT, the following year i had no problem at the same station.

As far as i remember from the MOT site, as per the links here, the ABS test is subject to the manufacturer?

good luck putting them right, enjoy the moment.

If that's all it failed on I'd be demanding a free retest as a minimum.

The ABS system is basically the same as the RRC I'm assuming.  The ABS light iluminates once the engine is started and stays iluminated whilst the vehicle is in self-test mode.  During this time you can execute the blink test BTW.

Once the ECU sees all 4 wheels sending signals of 5mph or above the light will extinguishas the ECU drops out of diagnostic mode, you cannot interogate it when the car is moving even with Rovacom.

If it does not extinguish straight away then it's possible the ABS pressure switch hasn't yet tripped out, I had this once after I'd been pumping the brakes with the ignition off, which empties the pressure cell.  After about 10 seconds it went out.

Given that the MOT tester has to road test your truck anyway he should have seen the ABS light function correctly.

If you have the oramge sensors on the ends of yellow wires behind the headlights then you have exactly the same ABS system that I do, if it's alater D1 then the sensors are built inot the ECU but it still works the same way.

All the lights on the TD5 turn out before setting off.

Unless there has been a problem which caused the ABS/TC/HDC lamps to come on, but that has been subsequently cleared by turning the ignition off and then back on.  In this instance the ABS lamp remains lit until you reach 10mph (the same speed at which the doors lock themselves).

Whys that then?  If is because of the RBT then I have to disagree - its perfectly safe to use a RBT to test LR brakes.

i get a ten day window for a free retest so ive welded up a couple of little holes that appeared one of them looks like it had a bit of help :x ive replaced all 4 ball joints on the steering but its failed on excessive free play detected at the steering wheel would this come under the 2 track rod ends as i cant feel any play in the steering box what so ever?

and im just waiting for some offset rims to sort the fouling of the radius arms

The ministry have circulated an instructin that 4wd vehicles can no longer be tested on 2 wheel rolling roads.  It also states quite clearly in the instruction for the RRC 9and on the fuseboc lid) that you cannot drive it on a 2 wheel rolling road due to the vicous coupling.

As many cars now have fancy viscous 4wd systems the rulling has been applied to all of them.

Mine is an M reg TDI, so definitely should go out when you reach 5 MPH, if you need i can find the manual and scan the page stating this.

i have play on my steering wheel too at the moment, unfortunately you can see that going into the steering box, so i need to replace mine before the MOT  :'(

A small amount of play is acceptable in a steering box.

RRB,

Thanks for that ref the testing - we do tend to lag behind the rest of the minisrty here in defence towers - no doubt they'll put some thing out on it at some point - but I'll be a civvy by then so wont know or care!

You cant perform the test on a rolling road can you because you have to check the operation of the handbrake and as it is operated via the tranmission the landy would take off! Litirally, and it has been know to happen in the past.

No the handbrake has to be checked one wheel at a time like the service brake.  The MOT requires only that the tester satisfy himself that the brakes function correctly, my local garage used to park it on a slope.

We've been through a spate of them failing on imbalance of all things - must be the larger amount of twist in the long half-shaft showing up in the results - We just sign them off as a pass if the overall figure is above the 25% needed...........

You'd think the RBT would be clever enough to know that the LR has a transmission brake and so in theory there should be no imbalance

It could also be the inbalance of weight across the back axle, mine always locks up on the test because it can't grip the rollers.
