Battery drain - possibly alternator?
« on: March 09, 2008, 15:56:57 »
Hope someone can help...

The Disco is only used at the weekends, but has always been OK... in fact, for a 300 is a cracking starter!

Three weeks ago - nothing!  So dead that nothing worked, flickered or clicked...

Assuming that the cold weather and frosts that we had experienced had killed the somewhat aged battery, I slapped a new battery on and off we went.

Two days later - flat again... not a flicker!

Have now determined that there is a constant drain of 1.5 amps - on disconnecting the main lead to the alternator, this dropped back to 0.25 amp

What is the 'normal' resting drain through running alarm, clock etc?

The reason for my confusion is that if I then took out the ignition fusible link, the drain dropped back to 0.02

Over a cup of tea, I wondered if the alarm release on the bonnet could account for the 0.25 reading so thought I would go back and try again...

This time, the standing load was 0.09 and yet reconnecting the alternator took it to a whopping 2.1 amps

Wot u finks... will a new alternator sort the issues here?

Why can't Gremlins wear hi-viz and carry signs saying "Here I is...!"

Alarm, radio, MFU all draw a tiny current, but 1.5 amps through the alternator

The rectifier pack is damaged or it's very full of conductive mud.
