and moreover how would the police take to one having either in ones motor when out and about given i'm dateless enough to forget to remove them  when I get back.

AXE !  YOU SHOULD BE OK CARRYING AN AXE  , KEep it in something like a bag! and strapped down so it cannot fly about and kill you!!
if its out of harms way no one will know you even have it, and if its for offroading, thats good enough reason to carry surely. boggert or lsp will tell you the actual legal bit, but i dont see any harm.

Interesting topic. I use a WW2 US Marines machete, which is kept in a locked box containing all my recovery bits and bobs which is only ever put in the car when I go laning.
The question of legality is one I have pondered myself. Here is the legal blurb about it.

Offence: It is an offence for any person, without lawful authority or good reason, to have with him in a public place, any article which has a blade or is sharply pointed except for a folding pocket-knife which has a cutting edge to its blade not exceeding 3 inches.

If the 'implement' is in the vehicle and out of immediate reach then I would give the benefit of the doubt, but it can all relate to the circumstances in which the object is found, e.g on a lane being used to trim back vegetation, I would say is a 'good reason', where as 'I was out laning a few weeks ago and forgot to take it out' would be viewed with some disdain.
It is down to the person to explain why the object is there, to a court if charged.

Unfortunately with the current high number of assaults and murders where pointed/bladed articles have been been used, the Police are very jumpy and you may be unfortunate enough to be pulled by an officer who is not sure about the legal aspect, and will seize it and say the dreaded words 'the court can decide'.
I have done that on several occasions, but the circumstances have usually been along the lines of Jonny Scrote has a knife or blade on him, at night, claiming he forgot to take it out of his pocket when he went out. Slightly different in the case of most off roaders.
A couple of hints though. Don't take any Samurai or Broadswords out to defoliate the local lanes, and definately don't offer to show them how quickly you can draw it and slice through something, as it may result in a swift application of CS (the chav aftershave of choice) or having a large lump appear on your head as a result of being chastised with Bertie Baton.

But as you say, if they are all locked away and/or secured, why should there be a problem? There are still a fair few coppers out there who have a modicum of savvy and common sense, along with the old favourite, discretion.

I agree with LSP, if you are just driving around with it for the sake of it and its hidden under your drivers seat, then you may have a few problems, but if you are laning and its locked with some other tools in a box, then its common sence.

i often get funny looks in town when i open a door and loads of  empty catridges fall out, and in the audi there are ammo casings stuck between the glass and the interior panel, cannot get them out, hope i dont get a tug in that, wont look good. and yes i do sometimes go out in the fields in a car and the cases auto eject out the side and every time catch the window and drop them down there.

Better still, some det cord around the base of the tree would clear it, although having det cord in your possesion might take a little bit more explaining away and could result in an extended visit to a dark cell for a 'little chat' to see if you have ever had a 3 month holiday in Pakistan. :shock:

Having worked in the 'Cundry' for many years, I know how easy it is for keepers etc to forget that they have left ammo in the car.
A  scary moment came when I was chatting to one keeper and notice a Phostoxin tube rattling around in the tray in the front of his 90.
Several harsh words were given when I explained about the 'Poisons Act', Health and Safety and other bits of law. If the DEFRA bods had seen it, they would have hung him out to dry.

Oh dear, id better measure my openal and swiss army lock back.  Still I have the "Im a farmer" excuse, mny sheds full of all sorts of nasty cutting/chopping things.

Re det cord, try unstable nitro like  in the film sorcerer (The one with the trucks in the jungle!, ACE film but only on R1 DVD, some on you-tube)

To be honest if its a tree then a small bush saw or even folding pruning saw is best, I only like axes for splitting logs/kindling.

i dont leave any live stuff, its just all the deads, as i pick up spent cartriges, plus they pop out the pump if fired from inside, and the shells areonly spent ones , dont worry! im quite safe, im quite attached to my guns and licences. :D occifer. :D

Length is only a problem if you get caught waving it about. If you can quickly tuck it back before it gets seen, who is to know? Anyway, if it is only 3.5 inches long I wouldn't go bragging about it.

Or if you have some really dense brambles to get through, one of these may be useful. A bit difficult to deploy from the back of a 90, hence the yanks use a C130. My son has some footage of one of these being dropped in Afghanistan. He told me that it made his ears ring for a short while afterwards.
