i tried some of those tips to be a smarter driver

but

i can't understand why operating the manual air-conditioning causes an extra load on the engine

sharing my car didn't work either, the bloke i gave a lift to ended up 30 miles away from where he worked

i went to work the other day with an empty boot and promptly got a wet foot from steping into a puddle

I can see how turning off the A/C in a 1 litre micra might make a difference, but I drove to Scotland with my climate control *off* and used more fuel than when I drove back with it on

I imagine that the 3-5hp or whatever it uses to run the compressor is lost in the 400 I have on tap

That's because it's all uphill to Scotland, and you can freewheel most of the way home

You can't buy a 1.0 litre Micra with A/C

On the 1.4 DCi it makes 5mpg difference though, on my LSE it makes little or non, perhaps about 1mpg at the most I don't know, but then the caravan makes sod all difference and that weighs 1,900Kg

Picky ;-) It was a generic example (I have no interest in euro-boxes)

Towing my caravan makes a difference, my mpg increases!?!?! Stick that in your pipe and smoke it Ken!
