What is this country coming to???
« on: March 12, 2008, 10:32:00 »
Anyone seen the story on the news today about the 83 year old woman who has carers come into her house once a day to look after her and make sure she,s ok?
they have to fill in a log book to say what they have done and how the old girl is etc, she has a stroke and goes to hospital and for 6 days *after* she is taken in carers visit and fill in the log book one even saying she made a cup of tea and spoke to the old lady for a while before leaving . only when her daughter comes to collect some stuff and reads the book does this scandal come to light [-X
these so called carers should be named and shamed  how long has this gone on for????

i take it you may (or may not) be refering to persons whose labour is cheap, and main language is not english?

unfortunatley companies try to save money, and a lot will put their service at risk by doing so.

quite frankly i do not wish to retire in the uk... i suspect i will go abroad and work for very little money

To be a carer on the state system you have to be unemployed but not claiming benifit, I looked into claiming the carer's allowance to look after my dad and quite honestly it was too much grief for the little it paid.

To be fair, I suspect not, from experience it the Brits that tend to pull the scams not the foreign workers.

Did anyone see the program about Peterborough....??

The Eastern European workers, all working hard with out complaint. Then they spoke to the British guy coming out of the Job centre and said I can get you a job for £7 per hour picking butter nut or something like that. “No ta” he said I would prefer to be on the dole...

That’s why this country has gone to pot, work shy lazy numpties we are paying for not foreign workers. I think asylum seekers should be able work, at least they could put something into the pot instead of a hand out.

But does such money actually stay in the UK or does it get sent back home?

I have to care for my wife and now my father, I saw briefly what some of the carers were like before his second wife passed away from alzhiemers, they did a good job, mostly, although when the agency sent their bill through the system  I got a copy of it, the agency was claiming for longer than the actual visits were

When checking this back the times the carers were sending in were correct, but they were rounding up by +30 mins in some cases, bit of a stink about it

The worst of it was my father had to pay part of this as he was/is in his 80's

I work harder now, flitting between two addresses, than I ever have done when in the army, or driving and fitting on trucks

Can't drink in case I have to drive during the night, and time away is very limited, he's now 87 still very sharp but not very mobile, hardly anyone visits, most of these people who do this caring work are very good people, sometimes doing a difficult job, for not a lot of money, in unsocialbe hours, they have the greatest respect from me, but a few like the ones mentioned above, and some other reportings that have been made over the past 12 months I remember seeing on the news, a group of people can screw things up, but unfortunately this is something that happens across a lot of jobs

It all goes with the fabric of this country, a long slippery slide down the pan, people take the money but dont care until they get caught

Doing jobs is fine, but not putting much (if anything) back into our economy isn't so fine.   :|

Care work in any form is badly paid and an ungrateful occupation. Most people who do this type of work and I say "most" will be properly employed by the provider and paying tax and NI contributions. So lets not go there about putting stuff back into our economy cos paying tax and NI is  a damn site more than some of "UK born and Breed and proud of it " who don't do an damn thing.

The inital issue was about people fiddling the system and not an issue about race/nationality. Being white, Being UK born and breed does not mean we are all aristocracy and I for one would rather be friends with someone "foreign" who does work and try hard than put up with biggoted, self seeking, ignorant, lying cheating scumbags who'se only way of feelnig better about themselves is to have a go at someone who is only different due to geography or genetics.

So...are we saying that they are not buying products to eat/drink/live on from the UK? They are not paying any rent (in the UK), they are not paying tax (on their wages)?????

I'm sorry but sometimes I just can't get my head round these things. I read threads were people say "right, I'm off to NZ, the UK is stuffed". Fine, but are YOU going to be sending money home to the family? Are YOU going to be tagged as an immigrant, taking jobs from the native population? Are YOU going to take advantage of any social services the destination country may have?

Where do you draw the line?

Boot, foot, other.

Pot, kettle, black.

Make your choice.

P.S. Just in case you're wondering, I wasn't born here and my country of origin no longer exists (not in name anyway)

There are several big companies in Lincolnshire that owe their continuing success to these workers. A local boss told me if it wasn't for the Polish we would have folded. The British workers didn't want the jobs and only lasted a week or two. Now we have an established, experienced workforce who work hard and produce quality products. That business had a turnover of over £15M a year, I'm sure they pay taxes, as well as the staff paying PAYE as well as what Thrasher said.

My Wife is Czech, and she works hard, very hard. she pays taxes, runs her own business also runs a local Mothers and Toddles group for our village, is on the pre school committie.

Yep, anyone on the dole after 3 months should have to take a job or do some sort of voluntary work. I work for a housing association and see these work shy numpties sitting around drinking and smoking all day whilst workers like you and me pay for their rent, council tax and spending money. And the laughable thing is that the houses are nearly always sh*t tips, with all that time on their hands they should be like palaces  :x :x

I have to agree with Boggert's earlier post.
If our own native population can't get off their lazy bone idle arses to do a job then someone has to do it. Perhaps what should be happening is that these idle wasters should be told that if you don't go and get a job, you will lose your benefits, your house etc etc. I don't have a problem with those who are in genuine need claiming, but why should I as a tax payer have to support some scrounger so he can use our money to buy bootlegged booze and fags, buy stolen plasma screen TVs, etc etc, while he gets all this stuff into his unroadworthy car that isn't insured, taxed or tested and which he probably is disqualified from driving.
Stereotyping? maybe, or just years of experience?

Datalas. You mean to say you haven't worn a lime on your head? Its very good for hair growth and helps it go blond. I was asked the other day why I was wearing a boot on my head. Simple, it fitted.

Well, considering I am blonde, it's not too wise for me to wear anything to make me dumber :D

Besides, it seems a good way of disarming a rather heated argument ;)

hi all, ive just been reading the tread, my view is the poeple who can work but dont, should be made to or risk loosing the benifits, there just laughing at us who do work, as for people coming in to the country to work, if they pay there way and can do the job well, i dont mind, i lived in london most of my life and there are so many people from different countries coming in and you see so many not working and not wanting to get a job as the benifits they can claim are enough, thats what i dont like but weve got people like that from our own country you can blaim others for doing the same, ta

Having been made redundant a couple of times now all I can say is don't knock it till you've tried it.

It's soul destroying enough applying for hunders fo jobs only to be knocked back at the interview, without the state breathing down your neck telling you you have to get a job.

I payed my taxes whilst I was working so I'm entitled to benifits when I'm out of a job through no fault of my own.  However hard you try to reduce the benifit culture of some elements of our society you invariably end up hurting the involuntarily unemployed more so.

I can understand what you are saying RRB, but my main issue is with those who have made no attempt at all to seek work, but have just breezed through life taking all they can. The same goes for career criminals. If they are fined, and can't/won't pay up, then property is seized to the value of the fine.
The value would have to be what the item could be sold at, not what it was bought for. So these scrounging habitual criminals could wave good bye to their nice big plasma screens.
Then they could go out and pick up litter to repay society.

I payed my taxes whilst I was working so I'm entitled to benifits when I'm out of a job through no fault of my own.  However hard you try to reduce the benifit culture of some elements of our society you invariably end up hurting the involuntarily unemployed more so.

RRB, in your argument, you automatically exclude yourself from the main target in LSP's tirade. You applied for hundreds of jobs, ergo you tried as hard as you could to go back to the workplace. I would find it difficult for anyone to include you in the "leeches" battallion.

On a different note, and as an Inmigrant myself, it really annoys me to hear some elements claim that we steal the jobs, the women, the beer, yadda, yadda, yadda, yet they are very fast (as in lightning) to state that they are off to Spain (incidentally, my country of origin) or any other place to find a better job, and come back ranting that they have been treated with disdain, etc... In most cases, the reason they haven't found a job (or held onto it) is because they could not be bothered to learn the language or because they have not been able to change their modus vivendi to suit the local customs. When they come back (or even before they left) they are the loudest when it comes to berating people because they speak English with an accent, or because they want to keep some of their customs.

Now, I am PAYE, I pay full Council Tax, Road Fund Licence, Fuel Excise Duty, VAT, NI contributions, indirect taxes on pretty much anything you can think of and I do not claim any benefits other than the basic Child Benefit (£18.10 pw). Regardless of what I decide to do with my savings (since most of my earnings are spent in taxes, rent, food and basics) how exactly can anyone defend the outlandish idea that I don't contribute to society????

On the other hand you get through and through red white and blue English lads like the aforementioned, whose exact words, if memory serves, when offered the £7 ph job was "I'd rather sign on".

Bigotry is a very dangerous habit, and it is a rather adicctive one, as well.

Sider and RRB. My apologies if you think I am having a pop at you guys. That is most definately not the case. And further apologies if it seemed like a tirade. A rant, maybe.
I do not have any issues with immigration. My main truck is with those, who abuse the system that is there to help the genuine cases.
This country, and by that I mean the UK as a whole, has had one of the best records for helping immigrants, and long may it continue. If labour is needed, then it has to come from somewhere.
Those who were made unemployed through no fault of their own, should be given support.
Those who can't be arsed to contribute, deserve no help.

If he's chipped, the Paw Police can drive around with an automated RFI Tag Scanner mounted in the Paw Police Area Car and catch more suspected ASBO moggies than ever before, except the damned paperwork means that the device will unintentionally return the Paw Police to the local nick faster than ever before, and law abiding members of the feline public will critically state that the technology does little to combat crime as Paw Police appear not to patrol the streets for very long these days...

It's a slippery slope, not based on reality (we hope).

If anything, I was wholeheartedly agreeing with you, and pointing out to RRB that your argument (I tried to sound jocular with "tirade", but obviously failed) was addressed to those who milk the system, not those who need the protection of the benefit system.

I got a bit carried away not by your post, but by someone else's (can't remember whose) cheap pop at inmigrants without distinction.
