Before anyone comments It would be ideal if someone could find out if it applies retrospectively, which I VERY much doubt as tax cant be applied retrospectively (oh no how many alcopops have I drunk). I

f I get time ill look but I don't want to fall into the trap of quoting someone elses poor research e.g. the BBC's. This is not a pop at you though Boddle, just for posting the links and starting the debate.

Cars registered after the 23/3/06

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/motoring/owningavehicle/howtotaxyourvehicle/dg_10012524

Note that Pre 2001 are the first box, then the post 2001 are below that... the £400 has a note with it with the date I have stated above.

If they hammer all large engined cars bulit prior to 2001 then every diesel van, large saloon, oick-up and 4x4 will get clobbered as they are all 2,499cc engines.

Shorlty afterwards the blind barsteward will be packing his bags.  It the V8 drivers who will get clobbered.

WHEN WILL THIS BUNCH OF IDIOTS LEARN   if I have to pay £400 a year to tax my RR so that I can two my caravn, I'm going to damned well use it, if I can't afford to run 2 cars then ther Micra will go.

If I'm not allowed to tow a caravan then I'll fly abroad like the cabinet do and squander as much fossil fuel in the 2 weeks as my 4x4 uses a year.

But then I was never stupid enough to vote for this bunch of cretins in the first place.
They have completely miss-managed the economy, squandered billions depsite having a cash surplus, they have got the country billions into debt and are still something like 6 billion pounds short of making the books balance because the downtun in the housing market has closed up the vein marked "stamp duty".

Oh and I've just heard that they are scrapping the fuel duty relief on biofuels in 2010, we have to vote them out NOW.

Complete and utter proof that this is not a party with green credentials, they are the emelder marcos of british gov't, squandering, incompetant idiots.

could this be because more people are switching (or will be FORCED) to switch to Bio fuels? hmmmm didnt something similar happen to Diesel? more people went diesel - so prices went up?
currently paying 92ppl for bio (went up on thursday) local price for dino diesel is 114ppl, RED diesel locally is 75ppl and unleaded is 104ppl...

This is utter and total rubbish If you look at the chart it shows quite clearly that Group G only applies to vehicles registered after Mar 2006, All they have done is split the Emissions for band G into 6 different bands instead of one large band, However on the chart it doesn't make it very clear whether or not the new bands have the same application date as band G. So I have emailed the treasury and asked them to clarify the situation. Instead of running round like headless chicken why don't you all chill and wait till Monday for their reply. Which I will post on here.

That BBC link shows:

Quote
EXISTING SYSTEM

on the left (for everything post 2001), and:

Quote
NEW SYSTEM

on the right, showing it is replacing the existing system.

I am sure all motors post 2001 will be included and taxed the same on a group by group basis, otherwise you would have two band 'A's, two band 'B's etc.

It says very clearly in that direct.gov link that pre-2001 vehicles won't be hit by the changes. We just have to pay £185 a year to use roads that are worse than some greenlanes I've driven...

On an associated subject, there was a report on the Beeb this morning about the government trying to get councils to coordinate roadworks better. They want all the utilities to work together so only one hole is dug instead of the same hole three times in as many months..... err, excuse me, but why has it taken this long to suggest this? It ain't rocket science and it should have been sorted decades ago

It seems that each time a road is dug up it reduces the life of the surface by a third. On that basis, it has to be totally replaced after the electricity board, then the water board and then ntl or someone comes along with fibre optics(!). Each digging up the same bit of road.

What the hell are we paying all this 'road fund licence' (I use the term loosely!) for? If they got their act together, the licence could probably halve in price.

Unfortuantely it stopped being road fung licence a long time ago.  IIRC it was Churchill who did it (not one of his baest moves) as the country was bankrupt after WWII and they needed the money.

I guess if he hadn't then someone else would have by now, we pay far more in road tax than gets spent on tarmac.

I wonder what the SMMT think about the new road tax, especailly on new vehicles, it stinks of car tax agin which they lobbied to have removed.

Not that I'd buy a new car if I could avoid it.

My post 01 March 2001 Landie has just had a quote from DVLA site as being £210 for 12 months tax under new tax scheme.

Band G = Over 225 – for cars registered on or after 23/03/06 = £400.00

That might be true for this year, but from 2009 it will also be for motors registered after 2001.

I'm thinking that someone will eventually try to simplify things for motors over 25 years old, and move the Pre-1973 thingy for Historic Vehicles to Pre-2001 in 2026, just before the Asteriod hits probably, so we all feel good, briefly anyway.

As usual they are going to hit the wrong people with the wrong amounts :(

They should be ENCOURAGING large 7-seaters etc, and ENCOURAGING car sharing. But no, they want us all in Smart cars (2 seaters) - how does that help a family with 2 kids (or more?) - 1 parent + child in one, 1 parent + child in another? MORE cars for LESS people?! Come on ..... that will aid congestion, but only by increasing it :(

They should also be rewarding people who have big cars and don't use them, say by N not taxing the car but taxing the fuel, or perhaps by giving tax releif on the samnller car.  If it comes to the point where I can't afford to trun 2 cars the Micra will have to go, it can't pull the caravn, carry the dogs or the wheelchair (or the pram in a few months).

We have four cars, two currently SORNed.

The wife paid £115 VED for the 1985 Fiat Panda she uses for work, I am disabled so don't pay VED on the 1996 Disco, my sons want to jointly run our SORN 1968 VW Beetle (17 to 20 year old kids, so don't hold your breath), which is Pre-1973 so no VED to pay, and the 1973 (four months too late!) VW Type 3 Variant is the last project that will remain SORN until I want to put an MoT on it and sell it in 2010/11, to partly fund the 2001 to 2003 Rangy I drool after (remember I don't pay VED).

Although, I have been considering conversion of a 53 or 57 Seater Coach into a 16 seater Motorhome/Minibus, since I have no weight restriction on D1+E as I also hold C+E.  No idea what the VED is on that vehicle, but as I can register one vehicle as disabled, maybe it'll be cheaper moving this from the Disco to the Motorhome/Minibus.  I was going to ditch the C+E when I have to go for a medical, since I can't see myself climbing up the side of a truck to get in the cab anymore, but with a coach, entry is much easier, maybe it's best I wait until I pass it before looking any further at this.

I could even tow the Rangy on a trailer behind it, think of the European Tour I could have...oh well, pipe dreams eh?

and the 1973 (four months too late!) VW Type 3 Variant

I assume you have checked the build date?  A quick google tells me:

Quote
Type 3s up to 3132058500 (Fastback/Notchback) or 3632058500 (Squareback)

are the lastest chassis numbers for tax free (but I'm guessing you already know this).  Anything less than these numbers *should* be tax free.

Thanks, but yeah I even applied for the car's 'birth' certificate from VW's records, definately a 1973 build, something I had to make sure about.
