new springs and shocks. whoo hoo

hi all, well i have finally bit the bullet and ordered my new springs and shock from mm4x4. anyone else used them? its procomp es9000 shocks and heavy duty springs with a 2" lift. will i need anything else before i start ripping the truck apart to fit them? im a bit nervous as its the biggest job im having to do on the truck so far.  :)  any advice will be great. jon..

The only other thing i would fit asap is extended brake lines
Drive the car after you've lifted it, it'll soon tell you if it wants any other parts
I didn't change props or radius arms on my first disco
You dont always need to fit castor correction
 :D

i dont know how anyone can bear HD springs, just taken them out of my 90 because they rattled my spine out!  mind you standard disco ones are pretty soft i suppose.

Possibly new front turret retaining rings, as you might snap a couple of bolts when you undo them (if you decided to take the turrets off that is) it ruins your day when you snap something and cant finish the job.

Get a set retainer rings and a set of nut splitters (£4)for the bottom damper nuts on the front cause it's quicker and easyer to split them off than try and wind them off as they are in a very confined space and usually stuck, also have a small bottle jack to put between the axle and the chassie, jack it up and drop in the spring (don't like spring depresors Had one go off ,not nice [-X)...

I have the same setup on my Disco and it works really well on and off road :D

He's right about the damper nuts, I drilled 2 holes in each one then used a sharp cold chisel and BFH to split them, you can't always get a nut splitter over the end of the damper bolt.

Once it's done see what you think to the handling, then let us know ;)  If you're not happy we'll be more than willing to help you spend more money :D

and dont use a ratchet spanner when tightnening up the shocker bottom bolt - theres no way to get it out when you've done!

My first lift (the LR equiverlant to riding your first bike I supose) was the same (or very similar) kit from MM4x4, unless other wises stated expect the procomps to be standard length. For recreational off road this hasn't been much of a problem and it means that a number of items like bump stops and brake lines can remain standard with no risk of damage. The kit I bought came with turret rings included.
On a RRC I found the on road handling transphormed, the first time on the road with the HD lift it had a roof rack loaded with tyres as well and round round abouts the body roll was less than before without the roof rack. Having said that a standard disco generally has stiffer springs than RRC to start with. Off road you have the lift increasing clearances, though stiffer springs do hinder traction.

As long as they supply the right parts to you at the right time then they are fine. From bitter experiance though their customer service can unfortunately be some what lacking at times.

i had this kit on my old disco from mm4x4 really helpfull as a ordered a 2" lift and when it came i wanted more so phoned them up and they changed it 2 a 3" at no extra cost cant fault that  :dance:

The only thing with standard bump stops is that you are unlikey to ever use them with a 2" lift, the springs are just to stiff.

i fitted the extended stops cos of my tyre size, not the lift.

my tyres kept fouling the tub under articulation with the standard ones on it

guys, cheers for all the advice, will change things as i need to i think, im using the truck on road mostly for now with a green lane once a month or so. im getting the hocky sticks and cranked rear arms when money allows me. will look into the brake lines and bump stops though.  :D

i had the set from them, including the bump stops and extended brake hoses, (still not got round to fitting the hoses) service was great. the kit had no boots for the shocks, a call to them and i got them next day, cant fault them.

the only problem i have now, is that the back end of my Disco seem to have dropped, and i now need about another inch on the rear to level it out.

Oh they were on when we got it, so 5 or 6 years I guess.  The LPG tank is heavy too plus I carry my winch in the boot, quite far back because of the LPG tank.

If you have got the long reach shocks you might find you need dislocation cones for the rear. Have just lifted mine and on the 1st outing noticed the rear springs had come out and where fouling on the tyre  :( put some cones on and was fine today aprt from the occasional bang when they located themselves :)

I had the exact same kit...search my previous posts for my experiences of fitting it.
1995 Discovery 300 Tdi...steering guard, diff guards, +2" full lift kit/ProComp 9000s, extended braided brake hoses, 265/75/16 MTs on Freestyles, Camel Cut, Team ME4 CB, Southdown snorkel, Defender A-bar and Wipac 4x4s, Forte treatment in anything that moves and a shiny new boot floor!

well its fitted now.  happy with the front except the axle seems to be at a funny angle. or is that just me? the back is not as high as the front is either but its definetly an improvment. thanks for all the advice and the comments guys.   :)
