« on: March 14, 2008, 22:08:35 »
Hi every one dose any one no if you can get clear rear light clusters for 300Tdi I have clear indicators front and rear but think to finish the job off clear rear lights would do the job. Plus when i have the old light out what sort of mod do i need to do to make the the main light work as in when the lights are on i have red lights on the bumper and on the rear light cluster. That should get some minds going. Thanks Jeff

Cheers Ben if i manage to find a clear light cluster kit i will try and get the 200. Was it a case off taking the old 300 out and putting the new 200 in its place or is there any wireing involved. Jeff

yes just take the 300 one out and pop the 200 one in,

you may find that you need to run a wire for the side lights but from memory i dont think you do (i will ask my boss if he had to wire his up) when he fitted his

Fitting 200 light units you will gain both a tail light and an indicator, you can wire up both from the loom that runs behind the light unit as the wires you want run in the main loom.  I seem to remember something about swapping one of the wiring strips over from one to the other too, but I've only done it once so memory is a bit hazy and it was dark/in a hurry so no photos

The hardest bit I found was getting the waterproof jacket back in place.

I agree there!! depending on what year 300 u have will depend whether its a straight swap or u need to run a wire.

with the dickie seats in, you have to bend your arm in about 8 places too, while undoing the wing nuts  another quality Land Rover design.

You could always do it this way. I removed the yellow plastic lens from the bumper lights and replaced it with a clear lens, this then made the indicaters into reversing lamps. The lamp housing on the side I made the reversing lamps into indicaters by fitting with orange bulbs. All I had to do then was change a few cables around on the inside. The top lights are brake and tail but on the 300 models the tail light connecter has been chopped so I had to add another cable and a connecter onto the metal tab that comes from the light fitting. Non off this was difficult just time consuming as the 6th seat had to come out and I didnt have a wiring diagram at hand for the cable colours only a multimeter.
If you do it this way you will get 4 tail lamps and a million times better reversing lamps, it also makes the indicaters higher. I reckon this should of been done originally as it seems to me pretty dangerous having the tail and indicater lamps so low down that the person behind you cant see them half the time.
A multimeter and a couple of hours would be all it takes to do this .... a wiring diagram would be handy as well.
It also saves you buying 200 shape lamps.

But as I said earlier the change was driven by safety legislation, which if I understand correctly you have "broken".  The change was intended to make both the tail lights and 4-way flashers (hazards) visible even with the rear door opened, in the even that you were broken down or parked at the side of the road.

Whilst I applaud your ingenuity it is important to remember that designers do things for a reason, it's only stylists who do them on a whim ;)

Yip, youre actually messing with a very important peice of work known as 'Type Approval' by muckin with the lamp layout.  Not saying its a bad idea and the police/Mot Man will be after you or anything like that, but like RRB poionts out - these things are done at the design stage for very valid reasons and are usually safety related in some way.  By all means mess with new ways of doing things, but I always look at keeping the basic system the same and adding to it to improve it thus avoiding any legal implications........

I like the look of them. Ok this has opened up a can of worms as far as i see it if i find clear lights for the back i will try and get 200Tdi and do the wireing to give me extra side/main lights and indicators as on other wagons i see no drama with that mod .Then if i cant find clear light then i will use a black spray to subdue the original lights to get the look that im after. Cheers david i have asked on this site and the Disco owners club first just to see if any one out there nows where i can get them. Before i start emailing companys but im sure some one out there makes them or can knock some up. If you can get clear indicators front and rear there must be clear light clusters. I am away on tour for six month so that well give me time to try and square away some for when i get back ready for leave and all the little jobs i have planed.

Yep, but then in '96 they went back to '200' style tail lights combined with bumper lights. In theroy the 'returning' of the indicator to the main cluster would NOT be a problem.

I know you can get clear lenses for the bumper lights at the back but I haven't seen any for the body clusters, I'd be interested in some myself if anyone can find them.  :)
