Noise when clutch is engaged
« on: March 15, 2008, 14:29:29 »
When I push the clutch down it is making a funny noise like something is rattling around. When started from cold, it doesnt go in to gear, so have to turn off engine, put it into gear and then start it to get it to go. Once warm it is fine, just the noise is there.    Any Ideas?

Thanks Ant :afro:

Sound like you could be spending some beer tokens on your gear box there. The fact that it won't go in gear is more of a worry than if it's a little noisey.Sure someone will be along who will know whats what.
Good luck with it mate.

Could be that the release fork is damaged.
It's only pressed steel & they are prone to failure.  The ball that it pivots on will often punch through the fork, sometimes right through.
Unfortunately it means removing gearbox to see, but if it needs a new box, you'll be doing this anyway.

EDIT.
Could also be a collapsed release bearing. Again gearbox removal.

Paddocks quote £8.98 + VAT for a CLUTCH FORK & £6.95 + VAT for a RELEASE BEARING.

If the fork has punched through the pedal wil either go solid where the slave pushrod is now trying to push the fork through the bellhousing, or else the slave piston will be pushed right out and the pedal will go all the way to the floor/lose all fluid into the bell housing. It's always wise to replace the clutch fork and reinforce it as they do wear through on the pivot point quite rapidly.

My local land rover specialist reckons he will only fit one brand of clutch and always welds a plate on the back of the new fork.  I followed his advice (right or wong)!  You can see my poor welding in action here!
