now the back brakes - grrrr
« on: February 06, 2005, 14:43:53 »
decided to give up on the hand brake and do the rears as I suspected they were a bit low from the grinding noise coming from that direction.

Anyway, one pad down to the metal   and one of the outer dust seals had come off... oh no here we go again so went to get some new pads.  Got the old caliper off and managed to brake the blooming brake pipe  :x

OK so I now need to make a new brake pipe - any ideas where to get some pipe and a flaring tool on a sunday?  Has anyone got some around the berkshire area they'd part with?

Those dust seals are more trouble than they're worth.  I rebuilt a pair of good callipers recently, new seals, new stainless pistons.  Checking the car over after a 'bit of mud' and found half of them were back out again!  They take less time to pop out than they take to get in, and has anybody else found the Britpart ones are worse than useless?

cool, at least I wont worry about them now.. it was a bit worse for wear so I soaked it in brake fluid for a few hours before popping it back over the piston (obviously cleaned the mud out!).. seems to have stayed, but for how long after I get the pads in?

oh one more question, I got the more expensive pads from halfords, mainly cus they came with the 'fitting kit' i.e. new pins and springs, which worked out less than halfords own plus halford springs and pins!  The pads I got have the stick back pad thingies.  Do I need to use copper slip as well as those pads on?

Only ever use one sort of anti-squeal device.  Copper slip makes little difference but never use shims and anti-squeal backing together.
