300TDi Starter solenoid problems
« on: March 16, 2008, 08:10:32 »
Mmmmm, another Sunday, another strip of the starter!

I'm seperated from my Haynes manual so can someone steer me toward the resistance figure for the solenoid windings just so I can check them out just in case?

Also, I've always put them back together dry, but I'm having so many problems with this one I'm thinking of greasing it - anyone done that and did it help?

[and NO, its NOT a spider fault!  ;)]

Then theres only the ABS to sort out after adjusting all the bearings, then the MoT, then the second battery to wire in, then the...................................

I have the 90/110 haynes manual here, but can't find any reference to resistance - just how to check the current is getting to the solenoid using a test lamp/voltmeter. I wouldn't use grease, but thin oil would be ok.

I've trawled through the official workshop and electrical troubleshooting manuals and can't find any reference to the resistance value for the starter solenoid. Typically, this should be a few ohms at most ~ probably less than 5?

Have you also checked the operation of the starter solenoid relay, which is separate from the solenoid itself, located behind the right hand footwell trim panel?

HTH  :D

Cheers guys,

I got 2 Ohms between the coil input and the motor body so it looks to me to be OK.  Thing is it still wont start!  I've got a good 12V on the black lead from the spider (and to check it was working OK I left it untill the immobiliser cut in and I then get (more or less) zero, plip the button on the fob and its back to 12V - every time of 15-20 attempts!)  I've even put a jump lead between the motor and battery earth - still nowt.

Its really bugging me now as it should start but it wont.  Just waiting for our lass to come back from work then I'll go down the hold in position 3 and [ed: naughty] the solenoid with a hammer routine and see where that gets me!

Bloody Land Rovers.  And to cap it all off the choke cables on my Africa Twin are sticking so it wont run right - bloody good job I'm off work for 2 weeks I can tell you!
