3.5 not very well after deep water

Hi all got a 3.5 efi that was running fine till it met very deep water,now it ticks over fine but when you rev it it sounds to be running on 7 and is well short of power,have changed the plugs/leads/arm and dizzy cap.Any ideas would be welcome.Cheers Pete

Couple of questions...

Do you have a snorkel?
Is it properly sealed?
Did the ECU get wet?

If you have no snorkel, or you do but it leaks (what's the ***** point of having it then?!) there is a chance you've sucked water up and hydrolocked the engine. That said I wouldn't have expected it to be just one cylinder.

If the ECU got wet it may not be performing as it should, but again, I would have expected that to affect the whole engine rather than a single cylinder.

Now that the bad news is out of the way, make sure none of your HT leads are shorting against anything... and if you haven't changed them in a while... get a GOOD set.

Snorkel good and sealed and have moved the ecu so that stayed dry.Had to bring it home on a trailer,lots of wd40  and  left the dizzy cap off for a day or 2  to get it started but won't run right.Pete

if you havent replaced the dizzy cap after you drowned it, it may have small cracks in it

am thinking what else it could be....mine did that a few times then seemed to cure itself...and i dont have a snorkel or have moved the ecu  :roll:

Why a new coil if it is running 7 cylinders?? pull the lead off on the dizzy end and check the spark against the block

Do you have access to any known good spares that you can borrow to test it?

Mine did a coil when I drowned it, though it didn't sound like it was running on 7, though TBH when they are running on 7 they don't sound any different so it's more likley running on 5 if it's that bad.

No got no access to spares(may have rebuilt it by the time I've finished).Checked the spark then checked the spark on an old ford the rangie one looks very weak in comparison.Pete

Is the spark yellowy or blue? yellow=not good

The same thing happened to mine in deep water, it totally cut out, flooded the interior & it never ran on petrol again........ :'(

There are two small breather holes in the bottom of the dizzy that let the water in, that may have caused the damage.

You need to modify the dizzy with some breather pipes along with the other mods if you like wading.
