wheel bearing stuck on stub axle
« on: March 23, 2008, 16:03:41 »
Is it national Land Rover bad luck weekend or is it just me, yesterday my handbrake jammed on and was smoking like ****, and now one of my wheel bearings has collapsed (not the first time this has happened) stripped it down today to find the bearing has welded itself onto the stub axle got any ideas how to get it off. Been trying to bray it off for ages and have given up for now. If you don't have any ideas looks like the gas axe is coming out at work :x :x :x

Yep. Had the same problem.  The race must have spun on the stub axle when the bearing seized & ended up friction welding itself to the stub axle.
Managed to crack it off with a chisel & LARGE hammer.
The stub axle was cabbaged though, so had to buy a new one.

It has happened before, wheel bearing seized on motorway which wasn't nice. Had to replace stub axle on other side. Looks like i will have to drive it to work and use some proper tools.

ye well tommo's truck has been towed twice more since then!!!

just bin the stub axle and fit a new one. the chances are that if the bearing has welded its self to it then the stub axles is fubared anyway.

I'd bin the stub axle anyway, the surface is damaged so a new bearing won't seat properly and might itslef seize on.  If you have to get the old one off then just bust it up with a cold chesel, wear eye goggles though as the bits are very sharp.

I was told that if you electric weld to a bearing race the hardened metal will crystalise and become brittle, but I just prefer LR special tool#1, BFH :)
