Turbo's
« on: April 04, 2008, 12:21:56 »
Well I blew my Turbo on my Terrano 2.... My mate got it in his garage and when he got it apart he said it ate its self!

Apprently the one of the blades has come apart and it cracked the housing  Luckily it did not blow it into the engine.

Worst of all no one will take it in as an excange unit for obvious reasons, so I have to pay full wack.

Never mind hey I guess it could have been worse.
If want to walk it walk it, if you want to ride it ride it just leave me alone to drive it!

Not nice but to be honest you ought to feel lucky; to loose it like that with nothing in the engine is very good going.

Yes, but then you don't need a big bit to reach the bore and the bill goes up dramatically.

Can you get them in the scrappy? Even a seized one would do as Part Ex. and cut the price a bit.

Hi Sweetie,

Got it sorted now, should be back on Tuesday.

Was lucky it didn't destroy the engine and the intercooler, but is been given a good checkover by my mate and ran fine on tickover.

So I guess I should count my blessings.

Good news,
Top tip for vehicles with Turbochargers, get into a couple of habits:

Start the engine and leave it on tickover while you put your seatbelt on.
This gives a few seconds for the full oil pressure to build up and lubricate it before you really start to spin it.

When you stop take of your seatbelt and do anything you have to do before turning off the engine so stopping the engine is the very last thing.
By leaving it on tickover the oil pressure is still there but the turbo runs down to minimum speed so it's doing the minimum possible spinning after you stop the engine (and hence oil pump).

I have considered a few times fitting an auxiliary electric oil supply but never got around to it.

on my dads 406 the turbo went so we fixed it and then about a week later all the bits of turbo that had reached the sump did the main bearings in. totally wrecked an engine that he only rebuilt 2 years previous.

Soak the caliper in diesel for 24 hours, you should be able to take it apart and rebuild it easy enough! (watch for the little rubbers as they are a [!Expletive Deleted!] to buy!)
