cables that dont go anywhere
« on: April 04, 2008, 13:05:10 »
was looking under the bonnet of my 90 today and noticed two cables with a socket sought attachment on the end of each one. thought it a bit odd and called a mate over who also owns a 300tdi. we checked his and then mine and discovered that one is i think where the EGR was, but the pipe has been removed the it now has a block off plate on it. the other one was meant to go to a small device attached to the top of the accelerator. i dont know what it is or what it does. can anyone shine some light on it, and tell me if i need it .

cheers

The one on the pump throttle spindle is the throttle position sensor (its is just a simple potentiometer), it was part of the EGR system and is redundant if EGR valve is removed.

is it worth replacing them both.
or shall i just keep it as it is.
also the EGR plate looks a bit dodgy compared to the ones ive seen advertised. it is a simpel disc with bar across it to hold it in place.

i just fitted a 300 with no egr and i dont have anything on top off the accelerator (peddle or pump), is your mates a late 300? i know landrover played around andf fitted a few 300's with fly-by-wire tech but thought it was only on very very late discos

The throttle sensor on the EGR should be on the pump shouldn't it? not the pedal.

300Tdi's for model years 1996 - 1998 all seem to have a bit added on - in comparison with the earlier ones. There is even special workshop manual covering those 3 years. Your right RRB the sensor is on the top of the pump next to the accelerator cable (But I think that's what Flash42 meant!  :))

Flash42, if the chap who removed the EGR bits went to all the trouble to completely remove it from the manifold you might not have the EGR ECU box either (Under the centre seat or cubby box). If that's been removed there is absolutely no reason to replace the EGR bits. You are meant to have a little more mid range torque with the EGR blanked of though, still considering it on mine.

most (all?) 300tdi disco's had EGR's fitted and it might be a sign that the defender has it engine replaced with one sourced from a disco. If an engine ever had EGR it would also would have the pot on the pump throttle spindle. Defender 300tdi without ever having EGR are fitted with a blanking plate as standard on the manifold.

But are the exhaust manifolds the same on Disco and Defender?

Anyway, back to the original question, if it's not bust don't fix it ;)

I am only going on my experience rather than expert knowledge but when my defender's engine went pop the replacement was from a disco, I recall only very slight differences between the engines none of which effected the install. I just took the blanking plate off the defender manifold and put on the disco one, manifold and turbo appeared exactly the same and exhaust flange same shape and position. I left the throttle spindle sensor in place as it does no harm and besides it seem to support that end of the spindle nicely, my defenders pump once sprung a leak from the seals there.

There are differences between the 200tdi disco and defender 200tdi's though, one seats the turbo much higher and at a different angle (if I recall correctly). So a turbo from a 200 disco will not fit a defender without some modification. I think the flange on the turbo needs to be rotated and drilled. I do not know much about the 200tdi other than what I picked up from friends and their landy problems so someone else will have to proved better info.
