ARB Diff Lock

What sort of job is it to fit an ARB locker? I reckon mine would really benefit from one but not sure it's worth it on a 17 yr old 90. If they can be moved to another in the future that's a different story. I thought once they were fitted that was it as the diff pan had to be modified?

If you buy the unit fitted into a diff casing, then it's as easy as changing a standard diff, apart for the fact that the compressor will needing fixing and wiring, and the airline getting down to the diff..... it can be removed from the vehicle at anytime, and fitted to another.....

I bought mine second hand from Dom ;)
Nuts and bolts, nothing more, provided you get someone to build up the diff. Crown differentials come well recomended.
You need a compressor but a tyre inflator will work for a while if you only have 1 diff.
Also check oout TrueTrac ATB diffs, fit and forget ;)

I want a locker for the obvious, to help me out in the occassions that I get unavoidably cross axled when off-roading, no matter how skilful a driver, some rutted tracks force you into an axle twist where I know that my TC equipped Disco3 will get through. I am running Mud Tyres, 265/75 but if one wheel drops in a hole across each axle I am going nowhere.
The detroit locker (not the limited slip tru-trac) looks better value but I'm not too sure how it works as it says it is automatic and can open to allow for cornering etc, not sure how it knows that I am cross axled rather than cornering though???

everyone gets confuzzled about the auto lockers
they are perminantly locked up, they unlock when you go around a corner
and IMO there are alot of french words
arb are brill, ive got front and rear on my comp truck and i cant nock them
the bit i love is, i can have a box std set up so i can manouver and minipulate the landy in tight spaces, then at the flick of a switch, i can dig myself 4 big holes quicker than a jcb can dig one
there pricey, but well worth it
i asked about tyre, simply because lockers can be brutal on drive train ( driver dependant, and tyre dependant )
with 31inch muds, you'll be fine, just dont turn on rocky ground with the locker in [Edited]
build up wise, its best left to someone like crown diffs or ashcroft to build the core into the diff center if you dont no what your doing or never done one before
time wise, it dont take long set one up, i can remove both front + rear diffs, build the lockers into them, refit, plumb the compressore and lines in and wire it all up in a day easy

I'm with Dan, the detroit locker is too brutal.. Great if you are rock crawliln' or whatever but because they effectively freewheel the outside wheel which turns faster, you end up with a 3wd in corners and that effects steering feel? you will loose the arse end in ice way too easily, the same goes for mud and I have had plenty of occasions where locking the diff made things ten times worse, you have no control.
I'd have a tru-trac ATB over a detroit any day, with up to 5:1 bias ration you can always get a bit of trackion by left-foot braking the wheel tha't spinning. You
cannot
fit a detroit in the front either.
There really is only one answer, spend a fraction more and go ARB, you'll never look back (unless you are intentionally doing doughnuts, which you
can
do with a locker ;) on private land of course).
