Buying a Paj

Okay i currently have a 200tdi discovery and its leaking me off so im getting rid and getting a paj, my mum used to have one and i like that and its different and doesnt have the green oval on the front,

SO

Which one would you say is the best? I want a SWB but engine and box:

2.5 auto?
2.5 manual?
2.8 auto?
2.8 manual?

Personally i was thinking a 2.8 auto due to the fact i like autos as im lazy and i just like them to drive also it would be easier to find a replacment if need be but will it then struggle off road? also any features some have that i should be looking for?

3.0 V6 EVERYTIME!!!!!........its as economical as a diesel (20mpg petrol/23mpg diesel...work it out!!!),cheaper to buy,faster,has an air locker as standard,quieter and if you cant afford the juice you can gas it(you cant do that with a diesel) more toys than a diesel :D

I'd pretty much agree - of the ones you've listed go with the 2.8 engine (newer, smoother, 125hp instead of 90, better gearbox, cam chain not belt). Auto is excellent on and off road and manual Pajeros are difficult to find. Even the 2.8 is fairly sedate, though - 0-60 is nearly 20 seconds. It will cruise nicely at 60-80, it's just takes time to get there!

The 3l and 3.5 V6 engines are a big step up, though, and all of the feedback I've seen on the Pajero forums is that they are no more thirsty unless you drive them flat out everywhere.

I was really pleased with mine for the 3 1/12 years and 60,000 miles I had it - I only changed it for the Land Cruiser because it wasn't practical to continue trying to run my Brit registered, Jap import, right hand drive car in Greece!

interesting.... but what is a v6 like in water? i go in water alot so thats why i didnt want to go near a petrol also i cant imagine i will get insured on a v6 im only 17 lol but i can get insured on a 2.8  :dance:

my mates just bought a 3.0 V6 and i have a 3.5V6 (for sale) and there is no distributor as such,it uses coil packs which are right at the top of the head so unless you want to completely submerge the engine they should be ok for wading unless you do summat drastic and you can get a snorkel from safari,the only drawback with a shogun is the torsion bar front  suspension (for articulation) but the air locker would more than make up for that!....i have had landies but theres no way i would buy another!jap motors are in a different league as far as build quality is concerned :)

i think im going to go for the 2.8 but will have words with my dad about insuarance on a v6 how much is an air locker then? my plans so far are to put lwb rear springs on the back with +2" shocks and brake lines and wind the torsion bar up on the front and +2" shock i think they have 1 on the front dont they? then 33" tyres on 16s maybe a 2" bodylift if it needs it then when i can afford it an air locker on the rear, sound good or am i talking rubbish and dont know much about pajero's?

alot of the 2.8,s have locking rear diffs, same rear diff as the v6 the 2.8,s also have the power option button a/t mode
i would rather have the 2.8 than a v6 yes its nice to have the extra power but! off road you will find the 2.8 is better due to lower torque and the v6 over powered and just digs holes

i drive a 2.5 with the rear locker and plenty other mods to it and my pal has the 3.5 pajero and we get the same places and do the same things on the tarmac yes he shoots off but i,m dun with my boy racer years

Pajeros are more likely to have a limited slip rear diff than a locker, Shoguns are more likely to have a locking rear diff.

Most of the Pajeros that are imported are top spec models and usually have the winter pack option, which gives you:

Limited slip rear diff
Twin batteries
1" (1) body lift
Extra insulation.

For most the limited slip diff is enough!

As Mad Geordie says the 2.8 have a PWR/Hold switch to alter the auto tranmission response - In the centre postition the gearbox behaves as a normal, well set up auto box. In "PWR" (Power) it will keep the revs high for max. instant power. In "HOLD" it forces a 2nd gear pullaway and keeps the revs low for maximum traction on icy surfaces.

PWR and HOLD are very useful for off road work too - select low box and Hold and you'll pull away in 2nd low, which is ideal for a lot of off road work - 1st is just too low a lot of the time.

OKAY Basically i was at an auction the other night and a surf went through which was in mint condition and the ssr with all the fancy stuff, i watched it go through to see how much it made and i managed to get it for £700!!!!! the only thing i can find wrong with it is a diesel leak but i will have that fixed in no time, now my question is do i sell it and make a profit or keep it instead of getting a paj?

both the same underneath(suspension wise)if the surf is a 2.4 td they tend to have head problems,but the 3.0 td is supposed to be a lot better so its up to you  :)

its a 2.4...... :'( but anyway ive already decided im going to use the surf until my disco is sold then buy a 2.8 auto paj  :D

Don't rule out a manual if you can find one.  My current Paj is a manual and it is better offroad, especially on descents.  I've had both V6, 2.5, and 2.8 in an auto and there's no problem with them, but personally now I've had a manual I wouldn't got back.

This was my V6, and as you can see it didn't mind a bit of water

lol good comment, thats the reason im selling my landy fed up of it going wrong and i usually come home on a trailer when ever i go out, i usually manage to blow a diff every time i go out....

You should find that if you get a Paj that's been reasonably well looked after then it won't give you any problems.  Main thing to watch out for with the 2.8's are the fuel pump seals.  Make sure the engine hasn't been run before you arrive to view  ;)

the surf i bought to pass the time has that problem, fuel pump seal.... not really a problem though they dont cost didly

just a though if u planning on running larger tyres as the 7.25 front diff will break also smaller diff no locker  :?

not too bothered about the front having a locker aslong as its strong....

i have the smaller diff in my l200 and have broken it, my mate has stuffed his alot, 3 times i think now

we are looking to transpalant the stronger 8" diff in to ares, im pretty sure they just swap over and drop straight in, its just matching the ratios up

if ur going to run standerd sizes tyres it shouldnt be a prob

I know a fair few people with 2.5's and larger tyres, and I've never known any diff problems
