Disco 1 tow bar - can it go ????
« on: April 09, 2008, 20:15:29 »
Can I get rid of the tow bar on my disco 1 to stop it dragging??? Of course, I would still need recovery points - what's the best way?????

Thanks,

David

p.s. i don't tow and don't intend to !!!

Yes, remove it. Pretty straight forward, 2 nuts are tricky to reach up inside the rear bumper but not too hard if you take your time. Did mine in 20 mins, that included fitting the JATE rings I bought on eblag as recovery points. Plenty of penetrating oil on towbar bolts is a good thing...

I have removed mine, replaced it with a 10mm thick plated, which has 3 holes in it
2 are used to bolted it to the rear cross member, where the tow bracket was bolted and the other hole is about 30mm, to fit a shackle to

PM your email if you want pics

Just remeber that the towbar has been protecting you fuel tank from damage so far.

I fitted a detachable tow mount from Disco parts. That way i kept the tow bar option and they will sell you a shackle mount that you can fit when not using the drop plate.

I have cut the disco towbar down so the drop plate retaining arms JUST clear the tank, this way I have the best of both worlds, the arms still protect the exposed rear edge of the tank, and the drop plate no longer acts as a plough!

Looking at making up a piece of plate to bolt between the two arms and bent up a bit to give marginally better protection too!

I've seen that done on comp trial motors as you get a good strong recovery and tank protection too.
