Tyres! Which, how big and where from?
« on: April 11, 2008, 14:09:42 »
I'm looking at getting a full new set of tyres for my Jimny sometime soon as the tread on my current tyres is starting to look a bit worn. I was just wondering what sort of tyres and sizes people are running on they're Jimnys and how they've found them both on and off road.

I was looking at such as the Insa Turbo Special Tracks or Colway Anacondas, although to the best of my knowledge you can only get the later of those in 16" and I'm currently on 15" wheels.

Any comments or opinions are welcome as they will help me choose what to go for.

Steve.

If your still running std gearing then biggest I'd recommend is 215/75-15's. I had 215/80-15's on mine but until I fitted a Trial Jimny transfer case mod I was down to 3rd on hills on motorways trying to maintain 45mph. Currently I am running 31 10.5-15 Kuhmo's kl71's which are great both on and off road, but have had to mod the body work and bump stops to stop them rubbing. Wouldn't like to think what they would be like on std gearing.

Hi is there any chance I can get 235 X 85 X 16 tyres on a jimny. Do the GV rims I have on my SJ fit on a jimny. I understand I would have to chop it and lift it but would they go on, Would I be looking at going a snail pace as well running them like my SJ

The Idea is having a jimny over the SJ is the comfort and should hopefully be able to go a bit fast rather then flat out at 45mph
Thanks,
      Baz

Vitara rims will fit but you will have to perform major surgery to fit the tyres in. The tyres you are wanting to fit, 235/85x16's are equivalent of 31"'s. I'm running 31"s. To get 'em in I've got a 2" suspension lift, seriously chopped body/plastic and extended bump stops. I've also got a Trialjimny transfer box gear reduction kit fitted. You won't pull 5th with31s on std gearing and on long hills will be down to 3rd or even 2nd gear.

Hers a picture of mine with tyres fitted.

I find this link useful when calculating tyre sizes and their effect on the vehicle.

What sort of speed can you do running 31's on the road with your trial gearing and normal gearing. The problem with my SJ is it runs out of revs going up hill and is just under powered do you get that with your jimny.
Thanks,

On std gearing with my old 215-15's I struggled to hold 60mph on motorways and have had to drop down to 3rd and 40mph on longer  motorway hills. The Trial Jimny gears restore the origional ratio's on 31's. I can hold 70 on all but the longest of hills with the 31's fitted.
