Steering box question
« on: April 12, 2008, 16:58:24 »
Simple question for a simple answer:

is the steering box on a 200 tdi the same as my 300tdi. i am sure the answer is yes as it is mainly the engine that is different but i just needed that warm fluffy feeling before i bid for one on ebay.

Anyone got one they want to get rid of for a good price in case i dont win the one on ebay??? this has failed for the second time now in about 18 months. hopefully i will get it exchanged under the warranty from my supplier but in case there is a bit of a fight i need to source one really. may have a prob with the pump prv failing and blowing the steering box. will prob change the pump at the same time if i can source one second hand.

Where abouts are you mate? there's a steering box here on a 300TDi that should be in good nick if you want to make me an offer.

Howe much is the e-bay one BTW?

BTW??? its at a really low price at the moment and still has a few days to run, that said, i am keen to get one soon. i wouldnt look at paying much more that 50 notes plus p&p for a non recon one. its a ball ache of a job to as you prob know and would hate to have paid loads for one that may leak the second i fire it up.

Agreed.  I was wondering how much the E-Bay one was as I'm breaking a 300TDi.  The box has done the 80 thousand ish of the car and looks in good nick.  It's still on the car though at the moment.

I'd take £50 for it without the drop arm (you watch I won't be able to get it of now ) if you want to help me remove it.  I shudder to think what the postage will be like though

i dont know how many you have done before but the easiest and well tested method to get the drop arm off is to remove it once the box is on the floor. put the box between your feet with the drop arm nut on a few threads, use your best lump hammer and give it a few good hard cracks. as long as you are hitting it towards you it never fails, well that said, it hasnt yet

the bloke on ebay is using a courier for 15 notes. so we would be looking at 65 quid in total. let me make a few more enquiries over the next few days as i may be able to get one local. if not can i give you a bell to see if yours is still up for grabs??

okay mate thanks, i'll give you a bell soonest, when do you think it will be off. i should have an answer on the eBay one and any ones available local by end of play Tuesday. i could really do with getting hold of one by next weekend so i can get one of my lads to do it at work the following week, i dont think it will last much longer as i am regularly topping up. perks of being the boss of an army workshop i suppose

i have a slight dilemma at the moment. the local landrover place is going to let me know this week if i can return this box under warranty. the only problem is that this is the second box i have had from them in about 14 months and i think they are going to suggest that i have a steering pump 'over pressure' problem. difficult to prove but that said, they may not replace free of charge. i will badger the garage tomorrow. in the mean time, i think in order to cover all avenues i will bid on the ebay one. i have only a few quid to loose and if the garage exchange mine then i will flog the ebay one on.  i have confirmed it is the same as my 300tdi, it is off the vehicle and ready to be posted if i win the auction. if i dont win the auction and the garage dont replace, then i will defo give you a bell if you are happy to send it on. will be in touch either way. cheers mate
