Hello again,

Can anyone give details of how to change rrc efi 3.5 viscous cooling fan to switchable fan / fans and rough costs please?  :-k

i just took the viscous unit off.
mounted a fan in front of the radiator and connected it direct to a switch mounted on the dash.

i used a old fan we had lying around from a astra gte. approx 12"

Cost me £2 for the switch and about £3 in wire and 10 mins work.

I spoke to Kenlowe for advice/to order a fan and they tood me not to remove the viscous fan as electric fans couldn't move anywhere near as much air.  That said I have a bigger engine and I tow a 2 tonne caravan, but even so I was surprised.

Removing the fan is easy, you will need the correct spanner which is a tenner in Halfords but remember it's LH thread, unscrew the mounting boss from the front of thr water pump and put it somewhere safe.

If you have air conn there is already a thermostat switch in the elbow to protect the engine, if not you need to buy one.  Wizard sells and adjustable one (other types are avaiolable) or I bought a fixed one from Merlin Motorsport, you adjust it by moving it down the rad iator.

You want the fan off whilst you are driving and then to come on after about a minute stoof still.  V8 engines down't like to het too hot, 85 degrees is a sensible max for the block itself though the 3.5 is probably more tolerant.

Wiring requires a relay, I'd use one relay for each fan (you'll want 2 on a V8) and if you are clever you can wire them series/parallel to give you a 2 speed fan.

go to your local scrap yard and look for a vehicle fitted with a set of twin Fans, mine cane from a Renault, but lots of Fords have then, but dont get Aircon fans as they run too slow

He does seem to get a bit lumpy if on a long run then turn him off and start soon after.
Could this be a heat issue?

yes i would go for a Twin set up, if this be fit another along side or opposite side of Rad but make sure they both run pushin/pulling the air towards the engine or it will over heat :oops: i did this :oops:

and yes the over heating could cause this more so on EFi's

Oddly enough if you have the 14CUX hot wire EFi and air conn then the ECU can turn on the air conn fans when the engine is off if the engine coolant temp goes too high.

I've also heard of a kit to fix the hot start problme which consists of a solenoid valve to prevent the fuel return thus raising the fuel rail pressure during cranking :-.
