Changing rear diff oil?
« on: April 13, 2008, 19:39:36 »
Hi there,

My Dad wants to change his rear diff oil, he can see the plug on the side to put the new in but is unsure where the plug if  there is on that you use to drain out the old?

So his question is how do you get the old out and out the new in?

He mentioned a plate or something.

Its an s reg 98 5 door freelander 1.8 petrol.

Any help be great fully received, as I am a 90/ defender girl and know nothing about freelanders. I will pass the info to him.

Thanks in advance.
Would you like to speak the man in charge,
Or the women who knows what's happening?

Don't go looking for drain plug!!! there isn't one

You have to remove plate/cover

A few people I know have added one while it was off

You can syphon out a lot of teh old contents with a pipe/syringe especially if you have warmed it up with a drive first.

I know some people have removed the plate and welded in a nut to create a drain hole.

Cheers

If you remove the plate, then you'll have to re-seal it. No gasket there I'm afraid - stupid idea having no drain plug.
