Axle identification.

Hi all

Is there any way to identify the origins of an axle from it's number? I've had a scan around the internet, but failed to find a guide.

It's difficult to read the number but it appears to be 28S 88639?0. The second from last number is totally unreadable! Does the 28S tell me anything?

I believe it is from a Disco 1, but might be a RRC. It's for a 10 spline diff, has 'mushroom' type half shafts and disc brakes. It has (had!) wiring for pad wear on one side only.

I'm just trying to find out so I know what spares to order in the future!

28S00001B onwards is a Disco axle. As it is the first number listed you can assume it's from a 200 series Disco.

That type are all going to be much of a muchness anyway, but stuff like this is in the Rimmer Bros catalogue.

32S 00001B Asbestos Free Brake
46S 00001B Non ABS MA 081992 95MY Onwards
46S 00001B ABS 3 Bolt Flange

Taken from parts catalogue. I suppose it's all down to brackets for ABS?

The axle numbers might reflect the differences in the swivel/knuckle/hub assembly each came with.
