Buying Defenders...
« on: April 17, 2008, 19:16:49 »
Winge time! Im looking at buying a defender and hopefully have just had my budget boosted with help from the old man.

Now i have been studying prices solidly for the last two minths and STILL i cannot work out why people charge so much or little for their respective vehicles.

I have seen a 200tdi, with no history whatsoever but that looks pretty asking for nigh on 5k. then i have seen a 300tdi with 150k on it part service history on a r plate asking for £8k.

And to confuse matters worse i have seen a 2003 td5 110 with fsh and 97k for £7800.

Am i right in thinking that people are asking for a number that might pop into their head irrespective of age, condition, and spec?

I dont know when looking at vehicles now whether its a good deal or not.

Yours thoroughly confused

Geoff.

They are dead basic, its a huge mechano set.  Check chassis, bulkhead and footwells for rust.  Check the transmission for slack etc.  Buy a basic ex uliity one and mod it yourself they are generally well looked after mine is a ex environment agency 300tdi and has been very dependable.  Enthusiast owned can mean a bodger has screwed it up, main problem with landies is they are easy to work on so idiots try to mod / repair them themselves cheaply and screw it up......

To this in 3 and a half years.

You will pay for a good one but if you look after it when its time to sell it will still make good money.
Just don't buy the first one you see .Have a good look about as there are some real crackers out there.
Good luck

People have different reasons for sellin too and at the moment nothing is moving, the car trade is dead round here so a good time to buy.

Location also plays a big part and at the end of the day it's worth what someone will pay as long as the owner willpart with it for that, you are dealing with human beings after all.
