Why are they doing this...
« on: April 18, 2008, 08:05:36 »
LONDON (Reuters) - A British government contract to supply Saudi Arabia with Eurofighter Typhoon planes could be in jeopardy because of an internal U.S. administration debate over whether to approve the deal, The Financial Times reported on Friday.

The U.S. state department must approve the transfer of U.S. technology on the fighter before Britain can export 72 Eurofighter Typhoons to Saudi Arabia, the paper said.

Defence company BAE Systems is the prime contractor for Britain on the deal.

The state department wants to approve the deal but has encountered resistance from the justice department, according to a senior administration official, the FT reported.

The justice department is concerned that approval could hamper an investigation into whether BAE violated U.S. laws by allegedly bribing Saudi officials over a previous arms deal known as Al-Yamamah, the FT said. BAE has denied any wrongdoing.

It gets worse - from what I've hear the replacements we're ordering for the Harriers will come with a closed-source ECU to which we won't get the source code. Just a little hedge from the USA to make sure we can never become awkward.

Thing is, look at the computer industry we had here in the 1980s. We still have the brainpower. How about stripping the American code out of the computers and writing our own?  :D

It'll be something to do with the Yanks trying to sell the Raptor aircraft and pinch the deal from BAe, much how they did with the TSR2 in the 60's. Orders for that had been made with the Aussies, but lots of backhanders were made so that the TSR2 was scrapped and the F-111 was bought instead.

Look way back into history and you'll see the septics have been shafting us for years.

We invented depth charges in WW1, they patented our technology.
We invented supersonic flight, they shafted us in a data sharing deal where basically we told them how to do it and they told us naff all (which in fairlness was pretty much what they knew about supersonic travel).
We helped with the development of the firtst nuclear bomb only to be denied access to the data
The jet engine
We broke the German inigma code in WWII, holywood claimed all the credit

the list just goes on and on, don't be in the least bit surprised.  The major reason that Concord was a comercial failure is that it wasn't made by Boing, they just can't stand to see anyone else have a fair shot.
