Another tyre saga
« on: April 20, 2008, 18:56:12 »
Bought my Disco in December with two 205/70/16 Goodyear wranglers on the back. One odd worn tyre offside front, one new all terrain 205/70/16 nearside front. For my last outing I swapped the goodyears to the front and thought the odd tyre looked bigger than the rest. Bugged by this I took this one back off this morning to find the size. It is 205/80/16. I haven't noticed any problems so far and I don't really want to buy tyres just yet. Bye the way the spare is a just legal road tyre. I have only had dealings with series Landy before, am I heading for problems running this as it is for now. 235/70/16 will going on for the test in November hopefully. :-k

I'd say they all need to be the same diameter so invest in a single tyre to match , part worn cheap off eBay ;)

I know about the legal side of the tyre size .I was more concerned with the damage it would cause to the running gear. 8-[

205/70/16 they must only have been 25 inchs tall. standard disco tyres should 205r 16 ,225/75/16 , 235/70/ 16 , 255/65/16.

id go for wider tyres there alot more balance on the road.

I recon there would be an effect on the diffs as it would be like turning all the time even when going straight .

the amount of wear would be dependant on the difference in size but I would say the difference in size would effect the handling more and I would think in the case of an accident the insurance guys would use it as a reason to not pay out.

Hi right firstly you can run diferent tread/ size tyres provided they are the same on each axle, but it WILL damage your diffs.
Cheers

The diffs are always running and are designed to, it won't cause a massive prblem with a Disco but don't do it on a RRC.

It's illegal to run wider tyres at the front than the back, and IIRC illegal to run differen size tyres accross and axle, whether that's width or height too I don't know.

Buy one to make the ste up for now, or buy some S/H 205s, they are dirt cheap as no-one wants them.

Would think the rolling diameters need to be the same, but not the width - space saver tyres or spares that aren't "full size"

Space saver tyres aren't that safe, that's why they are limited to 30mph.

Width affects the grip, you should have more at the back than the front
